  • Cosy adults-only shepherd’s hut on a working farm in South Devon
  • Bigbury Beach 10 minutes’ drive; Dartmoor National Park half an hour
  • Woodburning stove; traditional village pub a 10-minute walk away
Fancy an adults-only getaway in the heart of the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with several surfing beaches, the South West Coast Path and Dartmoor National Park all within a half-hour drive? Ned’s Meadow might have just jumped to the top of your shortlist, then. On a farm just outside the hamlet of St Ann’s Chapel (about 10 minutes on foot, or a very short drive) is the setting of your romantic escapade: a hand-built shepherd’s hut with far-reaching views of gentle hills and the South Hams. But the real romance is inside the hut, which has a woodburning stove to keep you and your beloved nice and warm after the sun goes down. Add luxurious bed linens and a comfy bed to the mix and you might never want to leave your cosy accommodation. There’s a cool box and a two-burner gas hob and grill in the kitchen corner, plus a firepit outside to keep you toasty as you dine at the picnic table, under the stars. The store in St Ann’s Chapel is well stocked with all the essentials. Of course, once you’re in the village, you might just decide to make things easy for yourself and hit the local pub, which serves traditional roasts, pizzas and burgers. Please note that although you have exclusive use of the shepherd’s hut, you’ll be sharing amenities (a toilet block, showers with unlimited hot water and washing-up sinks) with other guests at the site.

Local attractions

The spectacular South Devon coast (10 minutes’ drive) alternates sandy stretches like Bigbury beach and sheltered inlets like Ayrmer Cove. And all along the ragged shore is the South West Coast Path. So whether you’re into surfing, canoeing or hiking, there’s plenty for you to do here. Dartmouth (40 minutes) is known for the 15th-century defensive structures either side of the River Dart estuary: Dartmouth Castle and Kingswear Castle. In town, the Dartmouth Museum has maritime displays in a half-timbered building. If you feel like a relaxing train ride, the Dartmouth Steam Railway travels to Torquay, Paignton and Totnes. A vast clifftop green area with a lighthouse, Hoe Park in Plymouth (45 minutes) overlooks the Tinside Lido, an elegant open-air pool. Other attractions in the city include the National Marine Aquarium (the largest in the UK), the 17th-century Royal Citadel and the Mayflower Museum, with displays on the voyage of the Pilgrim Fathers.
