  • Small hideaway adults-only site close to Dartmoor National Park
  • Views over Teignbridge and the South Hams
  • On a 15-acre smallholding half a mile from the local pub
Stunning views, anyone? Set yourself down close to the Rising Sun at Woodland Camping, for a stellar setting among lush countryside scenery... and with easy access to activities and excellent days out. The sunrises, sunsets and stargazing are first-rate from here (see pics) too, and there's wildlife of all sorts to see as the site has been planted with nature and conservation in mind. Campfires are allowed, either in your own fire basket or woodburner (off the ground, please), or in the communal firepit for chattering evenings with other guests. Logs are sold on site. This is a laidback and eco-friendly place, on a 15-acre smallholding where two acres have been set aside for camping. The owners aim to promote a relaxed vibe with nature all around, so cars aren't allowed on the pitching part of the site; instead, you can park up in the car park and use a wheelbarrow to transport your kit. Woodland Camping is two miles from the old stannary town of Ashburton, 20 minutes' drive from Totnes and 30 from Torbay. And that Rising Sun? It's Woodland Camping's local, half a mile's stroll away near Ashburton and open from Tuesdays to Sundays for fine ales and food.

Local attractions

If you decide to give the car a holiday too and get out and about on foot, a nature reserve is on site for hours of rambling and wildlife watching. You could also take a trek on the Templer Way heritage trail, 18 miles of pathway following the old granite lines from the Haytor quarries to the Teignmouth docks; it starts and ends at Stover Country Park five miles' walk away or about 50 minutes by bike. A 20-minute drive (or about an hour and five minutes by train from Alston Cross) will land you at Totnes, the Devon town with Totnes Castle, the costume museum and a scenic River Dart setting. After that, take a detour to Dartington a couple of miles outside Totnes, for an arty vibe, independent shops and a 13th-century pub. The Torbay coastal towns of Torquay and Paington are half an hour away. Also part of Torbay and 45 minutes from the site is Brixham, the excellent little fishing town with pirate festival, seafood festival and the replica of the Golden Hind by the harbour. Also 45 minutes' drive from Woodland Camping is the handsome town of Dartmouth: for a fab way to arrive, take a River Dart cruise from the harbour at Paignton.
