  • Woodland site in spacious Bodmin Moor tavern grounds
  • A 15-minute drive from Bodmin and 25 minutes from the Eden Project
  • Games room, restaurant and fishing on site
If peaceful stays within a few minutes’ stroll of bars, restaurants, evening entertainment and trout fishing appeal, then making your getaway for Colliford Tavern is a must. The family-friendly site is a quarter mile from the shores of Colliford Lake, and 15 minutes’ drive from Bodmin, Cornwall. In the grounds of a family-run restaurant and hotel, the site is well placed for outdoorsy forays. On the famed Bodmin Moor, and within easy reach of lakeside walks, getting out and about is a must. Those comfortable with lengthy wanders should make tracks for Dozmary Pool, the rumoured resting place of King Arthur’s sword, Excalibur. Otherwise, throw the bikes in the car and head as far as Wenford Bridge to start the 18-mile cycle (or stroll) along the Camel Trail to Padstow. More of a ‘sitting still in quiet contemplation’ type? Colliford Lake is a top spot for rainbow and brown trout fishing, and a licence can be secured at reception. The on-site restaurant serves delicious food and soft drinks, and if you fancy sipping on something a little stronger, guests are welcome to bring along their own alcoholic drinks.

What customers say

Great spot for a peaceful escape with lovely views. Staff are top-notch. BUT, facilities need a spruce-up – some are old/broken. Bar/restaurant often closed or bare, which was a bummer. Handy for a quick stop, but some found it a bit messy with not much going on.

Liked Nothing

Disliked The place is advertised on Pitchup as having a restaurant, bar and live entertainment, all day food, various outdoor activities etc. It has none. The bar was shut, the restaurant was shut, there was no entertainment or activities, in fact the place seemed deserted. The showers and toilets were filthy to the point my wife refused to use them, and the whole place was delapidated and suffering from years of neglect and decrepitude. This was not just a result of being closed over the winter, but of years of neglect. There is absolutely nothing to recommend it, you'd be better off stopping in a layby for free.

From the manager: We are disappointed, though not surprised, to receive such an unbalanced and misleading review, particularly one posted anonymously and clearly intended to damage our reputation rather than offer constructive feedback.

Let us be absolutely clear: paying £18.00 with a dog and expecting full-service hospitality, entertainment, and luxury amenities is both unreasonable and disingenuous and even we have not advertise such. No business can sustainably operate under such expectations, and it is evident that this review serves someone else’s agenda more than it reflects a genuine customer experience.

The review fails to acknowledge any of the realities of budget camping and instead uses exaggerated, inflammatory language with no basis in fact. The site is operational and regularly maintained, with continuous efforts made to improve services. In contrast to this lone comment, we have welcomed countless satisfied guests this season who have shared fair, helpful feedback—most of it positive and appreciative of the value we provide.

This type of anonymous, hostile review—without even providing a name—speaks more to the intention behind it than the experience it claims to describe. We are proud of the work our team does, and we advise future guests to look at the broader set of reviews and experiences, not isolated attempts to misrepresent reality.

We will continue to serve those who approach with fair expectations and genuine intent—not those looking to undermine with baseless negativity.

Sincerely,
Management
Colliford Tavern & Camping Park

Liked I cannot think of anything, the 30 minutes we stayed were horrible.

Disliked The fact that one can book this site on pitch-up and the site States elsewhere on the internet they are closed.
The fact one can pay in advance (by Visa, how convenient).
The fact they don’t expect you when you turn up, but still guide you to the pitches
The fact that the moment you turn into a pitch, the campervan Gets stuck in the mud.
The fact that the caretaker/ warden won’t help at first, but when a bystander starts to hel pushing he helps a bit
The fact the warden points to pitch up an Pitch- up points to the site owner for a refund.
I Think I have all my diskikings noted Here:
The 250 points would be a Nice refund though.

(I know I should have read the reviews. But I think that Pitch-Up also has to remove pitchers with so many bad reviews)

Liked Nothing. ... Other than the view the rest was a true disappointment.

Disliked Everything!!! ... The journey up the approach road should have alerted us to the shambles that was awaiting us. Truly a shambles. Nothing had been attended probably since the last season or ice age depending on what came last. Over grown shrubs and bushes, strewn with the debris of trees and shrubs that had blown all over the site. Also fallen TREES scattered the pitches. The advice given was to pitch in front of a big tree because the smaller ones fall down.!!!! ... The shower didn't work, the toilet is broken and when flushed the water comes out of the back of the toilet!!! ... The rubbish bins were full and smelly and hadn't been emptied ... also probably from the last season. We had to leave after the first night because it was too miserable and depressing to stay. The customer service was awful and the site was like being on the Mary Celeste. This site should never have been advertised as open for business.

From the manager: Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. Please accept our sincerest apologies for your experience during your visit to Colliford Tavern.

Unfortunately, the site was closed for the season, but due to an oversight, it was not marked as unavailable on Pitchup. We have now rectified this and ensured that the site is blocked until the next season.

We deeply regret any inconvenience this has caused and understand your frustration. As a gesture of goodwill, we would like to offer you a credit for a three-night free stay during the next season at a time that suits you. Kindly contact us via phone or email to arrange this, and we will do our utmost to ensure your next experience is positive and enjoyable.

Once again, we apologise for this oversight and thank you for bringing these matters to our attention.

Kind regards,

Sorry not for us will not be returning

Liked We enjoyed the scenery.

Disliked No hardstand for motorhome. The ground was too soft the van sunk in. Herd of cow invaded the site. Their hoves chewedup the grounds and cow dropping all over the place. We also had trouble with the electric it kept tripping the electric in the van. (When we arrive home we plugged in the van and everything worked ok)

Liked Lovely peaceful location, beautiful scenery, the staff were very friendly and helpful and made us feel welcome. The little bar is nice, generally a great site, we personally loved the location as it felt like you were miles from anywhere, just in a pine forest near the lake.

Disliked The toilets and shower block were a bit dated and not the cleanest, but served their purpose.
The washing up facilities were also dated and very basic, but everything you need.

Liked Little contact with staff, but he was friendly enough.
Reception and facilities were clean but there were very few people staying on the site at what should have been a very busy time.
Nice pub and little shop in St Neots BUT its approx 30 mins away by car.

Disliked Quite close to A30 therefore significant amount traffic noise.
Many areas of the site were very tired and lacked TLC and what maintenance had been carried out appeared rushed and of poor quality
At one time it had obviously been a very busy site with a large bar area overlooking Colliford lake which was only accessible by travelling approx 1 mile down a narrow road.

Local attractions

History buffs will find lots round here to entertain, starting with some literary history. Five minutes’ drive from base is the Jamaica Inn (yes, the Daphne du Maurier one), and its Smugglers Museum is well worth a visit. Poldark fans will know Cornwall as mining country, and that’s well catered for hereabouts too: it’s 15 minutes from the site to Carnglaze Caverns for underground tours of the old slate mine and visits to a subterranean lake. More upmarket history can be delved into at some of the stately manors in the vicinity – Pencarrow and Lanhydrock are both within 25 minutes, and it’s 40 minutes to Prideaux Place. Prefer history to have a more urban bent? Make the 15-minute journey to Bodmin and explore the jail, regimental museum and town museum. Hols incomplete without beach days can find satisfaction within 35 minutes at the fishing village of Port Isaac or the town of Newquay, but if sand-free days more appeal, it’s less than half an hour from base to the incomparable Eden Project.
