  • Quiet family campsite bordering a fishing lake in Cornish countryside
  • Padstow, Eden Project and Bodmin Jail Attraction all 20 minutes’ drive
  • Off-grid pitches with lakeside walks; shop and pubs 10 minutes’ drive
Fishing anyone? Tregonetha Lake is a small, peaceful – and off-grid – campsite overlooking a two-acre coarse fishing lake, 10 minutes’ drive from the village of St Columb Major and surrounded by untamed Cornish countryside and farmland. There are no designated pitches and space is allocated on a ‘choose where you want to set up’ basis. The biggest draw here is the lake, stocked with carp as well as roach, rudd and bream. To fish here, you will need a current rod licence and all of your own gear. Double pegs are available, giving bags of space for friends to fish together. Not an angler? While on site you can follow lakeside nature walks, keeping any dogs on leads around the water so you don’t disturb the fishing. Within easy reach of several of Cornwall’s biggest visitor draws, including the Eden Project and Bodmin Jail Attraction (both less than half an hour’s drive), the site is also close to the beaches of the county’s north and south coastlines.

Barbecues are permitted on the lakeside camping field, and you can replenish foodie supplies at the mini-market in St Columb Major, where there are also a couple of pubs and a fish and chip shop. If you're during high season, you're lucky: the lakeside Wildlife Bar and Kitchen is open for breakfast every day (from 8am to 10am) and serves drinks, pizzas and loaded nachos on Thursday and Friday evenings, as well as Saturday afternoons and evenings. From Sunday to Wednesday (still within high season only), you also have the option of pre-ordering your evening meals to be ready from 5pm to 9pm. As Tregonetha Lake is off grid, there are no electric hook-ups available, but the owners do offer a charging service for your devices. Just be sure to pack torches and spare batteries for any nocturnal adventures.

What customers say

Tranquil lakeside spot, loved for its "stunning location" and "chilled vibe." Spotless eco-toilets, hot showers, and washing-up areas. Friendly owners, great fishing, and dark skies. Minor road noise and ongoing development noted, but guests rave about this "gem" and plan to return.

Liked Hidden little gem!
Lush well kept and quiet site with a welcoming vibe.

Pleasure to be able to park and sleep next to the lake , and on a site that you won’t get moaned at for having a wee campfire off the ground , As what’s camp without a campfire .

Can also fish if needed .

Reasonable prices

Credit to its friendly and welcoming owners for its great upkeep and design .

A great rustic vision for the facility’s , which were spot on and very clean - and hot showers !

Unpowered forest floor tent site

Liked Stunning location. Quiet but well attended. Fab fishing opportunity for hubby and teen boys. Loved the fact we could use our hammocks and own fire. Toilets and showers and washing up area really, really clean, bright despite heavy use. We will definitely be returning. We are local so was nice just to head away for a few days. Will fish year round now we know this little gem is here.
Staff approachable and accessible.
