Camping by the lake

  • Quiet family campsite bordering a fishing lake in Cornish countryside
  • Padstow, Eden Project and Bodmin Jail Attraction all 20 minutes’ drive
  • Off-grid pitches with lakeside walks; shop and pubs 10 minutes’ drive
Fishing anyone? Tregonetha Lake is a small, peaceful – and off-grid – campsite overlooking a two-acre coarse fishing lake, 10 minutes’ drive from the village of St Columb Major and surrounded by untamed Cornish countryside and farmland. There are no designated pitches and space is allocated on a ‘choose where you want to set up’ basis. The biggest draw here is the lake, stocked with carp as well as roach, rudd and bream. To fish here, you will need a current rod licence and all of your own gear. Double pegs are available, giving bags of space for friends to fish together. Not an angler? While on site you can follow lakeside nature walks, keeping any dogs on leads around the water so you don’t disturb the fishing. Within easy reach of several of Cornwall’s biggest visitor draws, including the Eden Project and Bodmin Jail Attraction (both less than half an hour’s drive), the site is also close to the beaches of the county’s north and south coastlines.

Barbecues are permitted on the lakeside camping field, and you can replenish foodie supplies at the mini-market in St Columb Major, where there are also a couple of pubs and a fish and chip shop. As Tregonetha Lake is off grid, there are no electric hook-ups available, but the owners do offer a charging service for your devices. Just be sure to pack torches and spare batteries for any nocturnal adventures.

What customers say

This peaceful campsite boasts a lovely lake setting. Guests loved the clean, modern eco-friendly facilities and thoughtful touches. Furnished bell tents were a hit. Minor gripes: unfinished car park, some traffic noise.

Greenfinch bell tent (basic)

Liked The bell tent was amazing. The campsite was gorgeous and we loved the owners ethos. The added service of croissants and pain au chocolat made to order, is a lovely little touch. We me Tom, the owner and he is such a lovely guy. The site is so clean and looked after. Perfect!!!

Unpowered grass motorhome site

Liked Everything, this site is amazing, was able to just pitch up next to the lake, the toilets are eco friendly and very tidy, showers were good and the sink areas allowed ample space to have a few groups, it's so quite (except for the cows 😂) Mel is so friendly and welcoming, all in all a perfect little site for a getaway!!!

Unpowered grass motorhome site

Liked Really loved my stay here, it was so peaceful. It wasn’t the typical campsite setup, the all the buildings were made of wood making the washing facilities look rustic, fun and different. The lake is nice and there is a walk around it which the dog loved. Friendly owners with an easygoing attitude.

Unpowered grass motorhome site

Liked We stayed for 3 nights over the bank holiday and we were very happy with the campsite. Very pretty, very friendly and very clean! Showers, toilets and washing up area was lovely and all lit up with fairy lights. It was nice to be able to walk the dog round the fishing lake when we were at the campsite, we will be returning!

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site (lake view)

Liked Great new campsite. Well thought out eco toilets and showers - no issue with hot water. Sinks and dish washing area kept clean ( both cold and hot water in taps).
Nice views of the lake. Attention paid to the details with cool and quirky finishing touches.
Flat grass. Always short walk to facilities.
Couldn't find bricks for barbecue but owner bought some the next day ( sorry for a burnt patch). highly recommended!

Kingfisher bell tent

Liked Stunning campsite. We had the furnished bell tent and it was so beautiful- the decor, the fairy lights, the view. The fishing lake on site is picturesque and the toilets were amazing. Big fan of the eco compost toilets and the showers are better than my one at home. Mel and Tom who run the site are super lovely and couldn’t do enough for us
