  • A wildlife haven with a back to basics focus, four miles from Horsham
  • A 20-minute drive from Box Hill and lots of walks a short drive away
  • Smallholding with rare-breed sheep; two pubs within two minutes' drive
A small and simple affair high on wildlife and relaxation is what awaits at The Oaks in West Sussex… and who needs anything else, when there’s such a splendid set-up styled on the traditional, grassy style of camping? There are very basic facilities and a low number of guests on site to keep all the focus on nature. A wildlife haven, this place very much is… there are wildflowers, trees and rare-breed Soay sheep on the smallholding, who the site describes as very timid but very pretty. That's partly why the Oaks is designed to be a relaxing place, meaning plenty of peace for yourselves too. In keeping with that traditional camping feel, you’ll need a trusty torch to see around the unlit parts of the site at night. Water is provided, and if you want to sizzle some sustenance, off-ground barbecues and firepits are permitted in a designated area. If you’d rather dine indoors, there are two pubs within a couple of minutes' drive in either direction. Warnham, the local village five minutes’ drive away, also has a great butcher, a church and lots of walks for those of you who want to scout out the area on foot. Parks, cinemas, sports facilities, a cobbled market and artisan or chain shopping are also at hand in Horsham, 10 minutes’ drive away. For more of the outdoorsy sort of stuff, Warnham Nature Reserve (five minutes’ drive) is yet another peaceful place for a walk. There’s undercover bike storage on site too – just ask the site when you book. Please note that due to unfenced pools, children must be closely supervised at all times.

Local attractions

In the mood to explore? The National Trust’s Box Hill (20 minutes’ drive) in the North Downs has an eight-mile loop or a stepping stones walk past a historic fort. Those of you who have brought your bikes might want to try the parkland or woodland trails at Leith Hill (20 minutes) – there’s a café there to prop your feet up afterwards. More trails can be sought out in the South Downs National Park (40 minutes), of course. Adding a historical element to your trip is easy too – options include the National Trust’s Nymans (15 minutes), Grade II-listed house ruins, and Polesden Lacey (half an hour), an Edwardian estate. Sussex Prairie Gardens (25 minutes), the National Trust’s Winkworth Arboretum (25 minutes) and the National Trust’s Petworth House and Park (35 minutes) are some other excellent locations for history and nature fans. What else? Sipping wine at The Vineyard Kitchen at Mannings Heath Golf & Wine Estate (15 minutes), Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens (20 minutes) or Denbies Wine Estate (20 minutes)? A visit to Brighton (45 minutes)? Perhaps spying on wildlife at the Knepp Estate - Rewilding Area (20 minutes)? You can also organise wildlife safaris here.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: We were given a very warm welcome by our host Emma. I felt at ease instantly.
The site is beautiful, peaceful and tranquil. The pitches well spaced apart so you feel you have your own space and all overlooking a field in the middle which is home to some lovely goats.

There are lovely clean toilets and fresh water on site.
Emma kindly allowed my very energetic 5 year old to feed the goats and the chickens. She was brilliant with him. So very patient.

Wood and kindling were supplied for a very small fee. My 12 year old really enjoyed lighting the campfire and toasting marshmallows at night.
We only stayed one night but would have happily done another night.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Super kind owners, very helpful and welcoming. A boutique campsite, quiet, with only half a dozen pitches. All pretty level and sculpted in meadow grass. A gem. Beautiful surroundings, sheep field, woods around the pitches. My son got to feed the sheep and he loved the games in the shed he was allowed to use. A clean and attractive loo too! We intend to go to this site again and it’s our new favourite.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: We loved our stay here-owner really friendly and showed us everything we needed. Only a few other pitches which is definitely part of the appeal! On the grounds where they have some sheep and vegetables growing. Definitely come again.

Disliked: Only thing is this site is off a road and in a flight path zone. Still quiet all things considered but did have to get used to the planes flying over initially. Did not deter me personally.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Beautiful scenery! So easy to find but feels like you’re in the middle of nowhere as it’s so peaceful. We had so much space and were able to do some amazing stargazing too. Emma and Adrian are both so lovely and helpful and are there whenever you need them.
Also the toilets are immaculate!
A fab stay, will definitely come back.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike!

Unpowered grass caravan site

Liked: We were travelling through the area on business and had booked last minute for a much needed stopover. Emma the host was friendly and welcoming. The toilet facilities were immaculate, always a bonus! We were travelling light and there were garden chairs that we could have used if necessary. There was also a lovely old bench in the little orchard area so we didn't miss our own facilities, perfect for just relaxing and watching the sheep in the field.

Disliked: None

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: * Perfect little site - quiet, small, calm
* Basic clean outdoor sink, and then couple of small very clean toilets in a barn
* Lovely friendly owners who helped our little one feed the sheep
* Lots of wildlife about for small kids to look at - we saw ladybirds, sheep, butterflies, bees, frogs, moths, rabbits, grasshoppers, blackbirds etc

Disliked: The only downside really is that you're not a million miles from Gatwick and some of the planes are very loud - fine when you're active during the day, but during the night it's not ideal

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks so much for your review, Christopher. It was lovely to have you to stay - and fun to have some help feeding the sheep! Hope to see you again - Emma :-)

Unpowered grass caravan site

Liked: A lovely, small site surrounded by nature for a little getaway. We especially liked the freedom of choosing where to pitch up, and that they keep numbers low so it doesn't feel crowded.
Facilities were more than enough for what we needed - really nice, smart, clean toilets and helpfully located sinks for washing up.
The hosts were lovely, and really accomadating to our request to bring our cat along provided he stayed on a lead (and he thoroughly enjoyed walks through the wildflowers, smelling the rabbit warrens, and watching the sheep from the van)

Would recommend :)
Overall just a lovely peaceful way to spend a night
