General
- Family-run park with spacious pitching areas
- A couple of miles from Sandown Bay and Shanklin
- Big family bathroom and tiled amenities block with spacious showers
Old Barn Touring Park is named after its Grade II-listed thatched barn at the park entrance, now used as a games room for rainy days or lazy hours. It’s a family-run park with pitches all set in a number of small areas secluded by hedges and with only a handful of pitches per spot. A communal patio has free wifi.
Once heading off site, there’s a bus running from Newport to Ryde within five minutes’ walk of the park, and the sandy beaches of Sandown Bay and Shanklin are within a couple of miles.
Elsewhere on site there’s a tiled amenities block with spacious showers, an outdoor play area for the under-eights, a big family bathroom and a reception area with info on things to do on the Isle of Wight. There’s no food shop, but the site sells camping and Calor gas and has ice pack freezing, and two supermarkets are just down the road.
The Old Barn team (from 2019 a friendly and helpful new gang made up of Terry, Emma and Gary) can arrange ferries for guests: let them know using the 'special requests' when you book.

Local attractions
The Isle of Wight has history, nature, dinosaurs, museums, award-winning beaches, theme parks and more to explore: start off at nearby Sandown Bay for amusements on the pier and to begin a lope around the 67-mile long Isle of Wight Coast Path to Shanklin and from there to Ventnor.
Blackgang Chine, six miles from Ventnor, is now an eccentric amusement park with rides, lifesized plastic dinosaurs and rollercoasters in its Victorian garden setting. Blackgang Chine’s sister site, Robin Hill theme park, just outside Newport, has more rides, a wooden maze, toboggan run and an adventure playground; less excitable types can go to the park’s Combley Roman villa, flutter around the butterfly garden or spot squirrels on the Red Squirrel Safari.
Animal enthusiasts have loads to pick from: tigers and other big cats at the Isle of Wight Zoo, over 200 rare and exotic species at Amazon World Zoo Park and the biggest wildlife park on the island, Seaview Wildlife Encounter.
For history, the seaside palace of Osborne House was the island hideaway of Queen Victoria and has her own private beach – and bathing machine – now open to the public.
There’s also Carisbrooke Castle, where Charles I fled to after escaping captivity at Hampton Court and where he was banged up again by Colonel Hammond: dress up in Civil War clothes here or have a game of bowls on the same green used by the unpopular king.
