  • Spacious grass pitches in the green Essex countryside
  • A 15-minute drive to Chelmsford; 40 minutes to Audley End
  • Tractor rides on site; firepits provided for campfires
What do you fancy putting on the schedule for your countryside break? Rural walks, for sure… and maybe an evening by the campfire? How about proper farm activities like tractor rides (ask site staff for details)? The place to find all this is The Meadow at Waples Mill, an Essex farm site between Chelmsford and Dunmow (and about 15 minutes’ drive from both). This family-friendly site is handy for walks on the Essex Way and other local footpaths, and tractor and trailer rides around the farm are organised on alternate days to give guests a glimpse into agricultural life. Activities complete for the day, it's time to chill out, and that should be easy here – all pitches have access to toilets and hot showers in a long trailer close by, and firepits are provided so you can have a safe campfire (with wood available to buy on site and a great farm shop 10 minutes’ drive away for fireside snacks). Pitches themselves are large, well kept and well spaced within a meadow that backs onto the River Roding. Dogs are welcome, and there are plenty of places to take them for a walk nearby. London folk looking for a quick escape to the countryside, this is a place to bear in mind – it’s only about an hour and quarter by road from the city.

Liked: We were given a friendly greeting and instructions upon arrival. Really good open area next to fields and away from main roads. We had no problems finding a good spot and there were Fire pits available for use. We were only a 20 minute drive from the centre of Chelmsford.

Disliked: The toilet block was a little bit messy and a flush handle had been snapped off, but these are minor observations only.

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked: The ground was flat and the grass was well maintained.

Disliked: There was no signage at the entrance as a wedding was taking place which meant finding the site was tricky. When on site, the signage was poor and meant I had to call the manager/owner to find wheee we should be. The showers weren’t working, there was no mention of this before we arrived. The toilets had no lighting. The door on one had no working lock and the other had no working flush. Neither of them had a light. Not even a broken one. For a relatively high cost, £48 for two small tents, I had expected the bare minimum to be in place. I was wrong.

Liked: Location was good! Nice and peaceful

Disliked: Free to pitch up anywhere however certain areas are off limits. It would be nice if there was signs that show where this is. As it can get very confusing. The host was friendly however when we booked on pitch up, he complained that the price was to low, what we paid. Made the kids and I feel very uneasy, as we paid what was on the website.

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked: The site is really picturesque and peaceful. I was the only person there. Except for the random dog walkers wandering through the site at 6.45 am.

Disliked: No one available to speak to when I arrived in the evening. Had to wander around the house to find a guy ignoring me while watching telly. He seemed annoyed at me for turning up. Told me they had a crowd over the weekend but they were gone. Maybe he should have tidied up after them. The shower/toilet blocks are awful. Think third devision football club away end toilets and you are close. Flooded, doors don't lock. Windows can be seen through. Fine if you are a swinger/exhibitionist. No toilet roll. Looks like someone has used the loo brush to ream a hippo. No lights (but this is a bit of a god send as you can't see what you are stepping in). Lukewarm water for a shower and you'd have more water pressure from a pensioners piss. The step up to the cabin was missing on one side and I turned my ankle on the other side as I stepped out onto the broken breeze block. £24 is way too much for this site.

Disliked: Water pump gets turned off over night so no morning coffee or able to wash hands in the morning No rules or curfew so other campers were chopping wood and playing music until early hours of the morning

Local attractions

These rural surroundings have plenty of natural landscapes to explore, and plenty of paths to follow to see some of them. The 82-mile Essex Way is the area’s major route, but there are lots of shorter trails around too if that sounds like too much. Or for a much more relaxing day out you could try a ride on the Epping Ongar Railway (15 minutes’ drive away). Scattered around the area are also several lovely houses and gardens to visit, including Audley End (40 minutes), RHS Garden Hyde Hall (40 minutes) and the Gardens of Easton Lodge (25 minutes). If you time your trip well you could also book ahead for a tour of ‘Britain’s Most Extraordinary Home’ Talliston House & Gardens (15 minutes). It’s worth making a trip into Chelmsford (15 minutes) too – it's home to the gorgeous gardens of Hylands Park, a cathedral with Gothic remnants, and a couple of top-notch museums including the Essex Police Museum. Kids need to let off a bit of energy? Try Jump Street trampoline park, just outside the city (25 minutes).
