  • Peaceful country location, within easy reach of London
  • A 10-minute drive to Maldon; 15 minutes to RHS Garden Hyde Hall
  • A 10-minute walk from a historic pub and wine tasting 200 metres away
Escaping to the Essex countryside means different things to different people. For some folk it’s a chance to take it easy – visiting gardens, taking gentle strolls to the local pub and seeking out cute little tea rooms – while for others it’s all about packing days full of activities like wild swimming, canoeing and long bike rides. One thing that surely links together all guests at Novoli Farm, though, is time spent looking out over the lovely vineyard views that come as part of the deal at this site (and you can pop down to New Hall Vineyards, 200 metres away, for a tasting should you wish to experience the vines more closely). Prefer a pint of beer? No problem – this site is on the edge of the village of Purleigh, about 10 minutes’ walk from the village pub (and the shop, where you can pick up supplies for your picnics and barbecue evenings). There’s also a bus stop in the village for services to the riverside town of Maldon, and the site is just next to the 45-mile St Peter’s Way footpath – so you’ll have options for getting around if you don’t fancy driving. This peaceful spot is an adults-only setup, but dogs are permitted. Things have been kept fairly simple on the grass pitches, but guests do have access to toilet facilities and mains water (please note there are no showers, however).

Unpowered concrete and grass caravan site

Liked: Opposite New Hall Vineyard, you can see the fields of vines from the site. Back to basics site, traditional camping. Quaint village of Purleigh and excellent pub walking distance. Bus to Maldon 18 mins from the post office.

Disliked: On the corner of 2 roads , but they were fairly quiet. Only 1 toilet, was very clean but wonky!

From the manager: Dear Caroline, Thank you so much for taking the time to review our site and for attaching the very nice pictures. We called in at the Vineyard shop on the weekend and they said that you had been in and by the sounds of it, you visited our lovely pub too, so really appreciate you bringing revenue to other local businesses🙂 Kind regards

Powered concrete and grass caravan site

Liked: Pub 500m walk away which was lovely ,great food and very dog friendly too. A selection of Hard standing pitches very much needed as very wet weather . Lovely view from back of camper ,would revisit for sure.

Disliked: Would be nicer if it had a toilet block built with a sink under cover to wash up. when I arrived I was disappointed to see a portaloo, but inside this is a full working toilet it was basic but clean. As only a short break no shower was not an issue for us.

From the manager: Dear Zoe, Thank you very much for taking the time to provide a review. We really appreciate your feedback. Also, very pleased that you enjoyed our local pub. We hope to see you again and maybe next time, try the vineyard 200m away, where they are always happy to let people try before they buy🙂 Kind regards

Powered concrete and grass caravan site

Liked: The local pub is in walking distance. Close to Maldon. Can be cheap if not using electric. Easy check in and check out.

Disliked: Too Close to the road.Off season it’s essentially a gravel car park really close to other pitches. Portaloo is the toilet. Felt disappointed in comparison to photos would prefer accurate photos to know what to expect of the site itself rather than surrounding area.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Dear Michelle, Thank you for your feedback and really sorry that you didn't enjoy your stay. As you know, the majority of sites close over winter, but we try to keep open as we are the closest site to the RHS Garden at Hyde Hall, so receive multiple enquiries for that and it gives our wonderful local pub and vineyard some additional revenue in the quieter months too🙂. Given that it has been the wettest couple of months for 2 decades, the grass area, which makes up the majority of our site, is far too wet to drive on, so unfortunately, the hard standing is currently the only area available. I would say that most people we meet are pleased that we make the effort to remain open, so that they can get away for a few days, go on some lovely country walks and explore the historic local maritime towns of Maldon and Burnham on Crouch etc. If you had used the toilet, you would have seen that inside is a fully functional flushing toilet, with an oak soft-close seat and connected to mains drainage🙂. I guess most sites have spring and summer pictures, rather than winter, but I will look to add some more in. Kind regards

Local attractions

The maritime town of Maldon (10 minutes’ drive) is a good place to start your tour of the area – perhaps with a stroll along Hythe Quay to see one of the UK’s largest collections of London barges. You can also launch canoes or hire bikes here, or join boat trips out onto the Blackwater Estuary. Just outside the town, the Museum of Power is worth a visit to see the miniature railway and working steam pump. For more watery activities, head to Hoe Mill lock (10 minutes), a well-known local wild swimming spot, or the historic harbour at Burnham-on-Crouch (20 minutes). The Dengie National Nature Reserve (half an hour) is a good place to be if you’re into your birdwatching. Gardens more your thing? RHS Garden Hyde Hall (15 minutes) is the big draw nearby, with several themed areas keeping things interesting all year round. The three acres at Beeleigh Abbey Gardens (10 minutes) are also worth exploring, or you can try the trails of Danbury Country Park (also 10 minutes) if you’d like to see something wilder.
