  • Adults-only woodland site five minutes' walk from the Cumbrian coast
  • A five-minute drive from Ulverston; 15 minutes from the Lake District
  • A mile from a leisure centre, food shop and meditation centre
Sitting between the Cumbrian coast and the Lake District, Brick Kiln Wood is a secluded woodland site suitable for hammocks and tents. This back to basics spot has great woodland pitches and functional eco toilets, leaving the rest up to you. Want to work on your camp cooking skills, listen to the dawn chorus and identify animal tracks? This is the place to do it. This very relaxed site is also a five-minute walk from a pebbly beach that looks out over a gorgeous estuary. After spotting more nature here and watching the world go by, you could head into Ulverston (five minutes' drive), a lively little town with lots of local heritage and a wide range of food places to try. After hikes or bike rides in the nearby Lake District? The national park boundary is approximately a quarter of an hour away by road, opening up all of the hilly scenery of the splendid southern Lakes. Please note that Brick Kiln Wood is an adults-only park and that guests under the age of 18 are not allowed on site. This is a quiet spot, so please keep the volume low between 9pm and 7am out of consideration to your neighbours.

Local attractions

Like a good laugh? The Laurel and Hardy Museum is five minutes away by road if you fancy learning more about Stan Laurel, probably Ulverston's most famous son. For meditation and mindfulness, meanwhile, drop by at Conishead Priory (five minutes), a historic Gothic Revival building on the Furness Peninsula that's been a popular local Buddhist centre since the 1970s. Other local points of interest include the Sir John Barrow Monument (10 minutes), a 100-foot tower built to resemble a lighthouse but without a light inside, the South Lakes Safari Zoo (15 minutes), home to an array of unusual creatures from near and far, and Furness Abbey (20 minutes), once the largest and wealthiest monastery in this part of England. For outdoor activities, head for a walk around Sandscale Haws National Nature Reserve (20 minutes), a vast coastal habitat with miles of spectacular sand dunes, or head to the hills and hike up the Old Man of Coniston (40 minutes) – making sure you have checked the forecast, know where you’re going and are properly equipped beforehand, of course.

Unpowered grass and earth tent site (woodland)

Liked: Great eco site close enough to civilisation if you need bits or want a meal out, far enough away if you want to stay off grid.

Disliked: Bit difficult to spot on the way in, could do with better signage.

Unpowered grass and earth tent site (woodland)

Liked: The camping area was beautiful really quite not many pitches so not crowded very basic site so attracted searingly nice people . The people running the site were very helpful and nice. Chickens were very friendly.

Disliked: Nothing really to dislike, the only way it could be improved would be a slightly bigger toilet shed , I’m a fairly big bloke and struggled with the width inside the shed but only a minor thing , everything else was perfect
