  • Solar-powered vintage caravan at a rural South Yorkshire site
  • Yorkshire Sculpture Park and Cannon Hall within 20 minutes' drive
  • Reflexology and Indian head massage available to book on site
Kick off your shoes and embrace a slower pace of life at Sunnyside Eco Caravan, where a single solar-powered van sits in a green meadow near the village of Silkstone, surrounded by South Yorkshire’s gently hilly landscape. Life is simple here: it's a place where you can stroll barefoot on the grass, relax with a book in the shadow of a tree, or max the chillout factor with an Indian head massage or a reflexology session (both available to book on site). Of course, there’s also plenty to do in the vicinity – there's fishing close by at Blacker Dam, and the area is laced with woodland paths for walkers (with the Trans Pennine Trail running less than a mile to the south). Back at base you'll be able to cosy up in a retro-style van that's been kitted out with lots of vintage touches along with 21st-century amenities including a DVD player, an eco toilet and a carbon monoxide detector. No need to bring your favourite movies from home, either: there’s a well-stocked DVD library over in the games room, along with a snooker table. A mini kitchen (with fridge, kettle and microwave) is on board too, so you'll be able to prep meals to be take out to the bistro table outside the van. An outdoor woodburner and hot water bottles are provided to help you keep warm as you watch the sun set. A supermarket within a three-minute walk is a handy thing for snacks and other supplies. If you prefer to take a break from kitchen duties, a five-minute walk into the village takes you to a traditional pub serving pies, burgers and Sunday lunches.

Local attractions

Combine your outdoor time with a spot of culture at Yorkshire Sculpture Park (20 minutes’ drive), where modern and contemporary artworks – from totemic bronzes and thought-provoking, politically charged installations to more whimsical projects like a colourful mosaic octopus – dot the undulating lawns. If your tastes run more to period decorative arts, check out the collections at Cannon Hall (10 minutes), a Georgian mansion with romantic gardens and vast grounds dotted with architectural follies (plus climbing structures and tepees). Hire a swan boat and feed the ducks on the pond, or let the kids blow off some steam at the designated play area. But if you really want to make the children happy, head to Cannon Hall Farm (10 minutes), where they’ll meet alpacas and ponies, learn to handle snakes at the Reptile House, and channel their inner hamster in a giant tube maze.
