Time for a romantic break à deux? Time to head for Hetton Law Shepherd’s Hut in North Northumberland, where you can hide yourselves away in a cosy hut with uninterrupted views over farmland between the Kyloe and Cheviot hills. At 10 minutes’ drive from the small rural village of Chatton, the shepherd’s hut is warm, cosy and welcoming with a comfortable double bed (and room to store stuff underneath), a table and chair. There is a kettle for brewing up tea or coffee any time of day, and a woodburning stove (a starter box of kindling, logs and firelighters is supplied, more wood incurs a small cost) to keep you warm on cooler evenings. The modern ensuite comprises a toilet, basin and electric shower and has underfloor heating for extra comfort. All bedding and towels are provided. Outside, the hut has a private fenced-off garden with two picnic areas (you can follow the sun as it moves round during the day) plus a sunroom with cosy seating and a kitchen corner with hob, oven, sink, fridge/freezer, kettle and woodburner. From the hut there are views over to St Cuthbert’s Cave; on clear nights the skies dance with stars and you might be lucky enough to see the Northern Lights.

Local attractions

So, how to spend your time at Hetton Law? In Wooler (10 minutes’ drive), you can take a tour of Ad Gefrin whisky distillery and also discover something of Northumberland’s ancient Roman backstory at the in-house Anglo-Saxon Museum. The Harry Potter film locations and Poison Garden at Alnwick Castle (half an hour) are yours to explore, or make for the handsome seaside town of Berwick-upon-Tweed (20 minutes’ drive) to walk the Elizabethan-era defence walls. From there, sneak across into the Scottish Borders to tour the gardens and riverside walks at Floors Castle (45 minutes). Firmly back in Blighty, there’s more culture to be had on a guided tour of Bamburgh Castle (25 minutes), and after that you can clear your head on long ambles along the sandy beach. More walks and many bike rides are found in the Cheviot Hills (15 minutes), or to Bronze Age settlements and ancient hill forts in the lush Ingram Valley (25 minutes). For a day trip out on the water, head for the Farne Islands from Seahouses (half an hour) to see the nesting birds, seals and (sometimes) dolphins dancing in the waves.
