  • Spacious pitching field at a dog-friendly North Yorkshire pub
  • A 10-minute drive to Ingleton; Ribblehead Viaduct 20 minutes
  • Beer garden, play area and menu of locally sourced dishes
Prepare to be bowled over by this Yorkshire site – it certainly punches above its weight in terms of location and (perhaps more importantly) food. The Punch Bowl Hotel is in Low Bentham, a pretty North Yorkshire village with community features including plentiful public footpaths, a post office and a church, plus steam trains passing by every now and then. (It's also said to be where Queen Victoria had her silk bloomers made, but that's another story…). This is a top spot to base yourselves in for exploring the local countryside, as it’s close to heaps of excellent walking trails and attractions like Ingleborough Cave, Lancaster Castle and Ribblehead Viaduct – and it’s not far to the coast either, for a paddle at Morecambe beach. After a long day of exploring, it’s back to base for a refreshing pint and a tasty meal at the pub, which is known for both its friendly atmosphere and its menu of locally sourced dishes. You’ll have a choice of settling down in the pub’s cosy interior or taking a table out in the beer garden; the latter is likely to be popular with the kids, as it’s close to the play area. Dogs are welcome here too, both at the pub and on the pitches. The field has its own simple facilities in the form of a shower and toilet; there’s also access to additional toilets in the pub during opening hours. There's a village shop a couple of minutes' walk from base, but if you need a supermarket make tracks for Ingleton (10 minutes' drive).

What customers say

Great value, friendly spot in a beaut location. Toilets & showers are clean and new, pub meals a hit. Quiet, pleasant, loads of room for kids. Most reckon it's ace, though a few noted skimpy loos & TP shortages.

Liked We came for a last minute weekend camping adventure in our little campervan, with two children and a dog. We arrived Friday evening to a very warm welcome from Geoff and his partner and their lovely little dog Princess, who were very hospitable throughout our stay. We were bowled over really, as it was a reasonable price for such a lovely site in a gorgeous location, with a safe play park and big spacious field for the children to play in. There was one toilet and shower which were clean, aside from a bit of grass from the field. We were also able to use the pub toilets which was very convenient when the loo was in use but that was only needed a couple of times. We ate in the pub on Saturday evening, very tasty and fresh, typical pub grub and very good value for money. Other than having a fresh water tap and electric hook ups available, I can't comment on other facilities as we used our own sink to wash up but as far as we were concerned, the site had all we needed. There is so much to do in the local area that we couldn't cram it all in to our short visit so we will definitely be back again. This site will be on our annual list of places to stay.

Disliked Nothing really, other than it would be handy to have a hook in the toilet and shower.

Liked Friendly staff and off the beaten track campsite with great options to eat out nearby. Small playpark at back of pub for small children.

Disliked One toilet for around 20 pitches, which had no toilet roll for the 12 hours we stayed there. An unfortunate coincidence…. But got the feeling the management is a little overwhelmed with many plates spinning. camping ground is at the back of a pub so it can get rowdy

From the manager: So sorry you didn’t enjoy your visit. We had an event on that day with 47 bikers for a bbq and music and staff didn’t turn in. I did put toilet roll in several times but it kept disappearing. Thankyou for your feedback, it’s useful moving forward as we have only recently opened the camping field. Helen

Nice stay, definitely book again.

Liked A Wonderful Last-Minute Family Escape
We camped as a family of four and booked last minute, so glad we did! The site was great, and we were lucky with the weather, which meant the kids could enjoy the swings in the beer garden and run around the open field. We also happened to catch live entertainment in the garden, a fantastic band that added to the atmosphere. The pub itself was lovely, the food was good, and the whole experience made for a wonderful stay. Would definitely return!

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked Had an amazing stay in our tents at the Punch Bowl Hotel campsite! The pitches were clean and well looked after, and the owners were so friendly and welcoming. They had no problem with us potentially needing a late checkout, which we really appreciated (even though we ended up leaving by 12:00 as planned).

The location is brilliant, perfect base for exploring local caves, waterfalls, and beautiful countryside walks. The onsite pub served absolutely lovely food too, proper homecooked and full of flavour. It made the stay even better having a great meal right on our doorstep.

Toilets and showers were spotless and new, which made such a difference. Honestly can’t fault it, everything was easy, chilled and comfortable.

Would 100% come back again. A proper hidden gem.

Disliked As the grass had recently been cut it blocked the shower cubicle after a few people had used it. Didn’t affect my stay but just a heads up for future.

Local attractions

Ingleton (10 minutes' drive) has plenty to keep you popping back – there's a (seasonal) heated outdoor pool, craft shops and the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail, an attractive and easygoing five-mile circular route. As the site is on the edge of the Forest of Bowland National Landscape and close to the Yorkshire Dales, there are plenty more trails around for all ages and abilities – including a challenging route up to the peak of Ingleborough (15 minutes). The scenery extends underground too, as you’ll see if you visit the dramatic Ingleborough Cave (20 minutes). And there are also manmade attractions, such as the impressive Ribblehead Viaduct (20 minutes), with a footpath running alongside. If you’re not into walking you can also catch a train on the scenic Settle to Carlisle line. Other local leisure spots include Bentham Golf Course (five minutes), Morecambe's attractive beachfront (30 minutes) and Kirkby Lonsdale's jaw-dropping Devil's Bridge (20 minutes). Travelling with kids? Take them to play knights and damsels at Lancaster Castle (30 minutes), go bowling in Morecambe (30 minutes) or cool off at Splash Park Happy Mount (30 minutes).
