  • Well-maintained, peaceful Yorkshire park 10 minutes’ drive from Whitby
  • Robin Hood’s Bay five minutes’ drive and Scarborough half an hour
  • Restaurant and bar on site, plus a play area and dedicated dog park
Set in 10 acres of stunning North Yorkshire moors and countryside, York House Caravan Park is just 10 minutes’ drive away from Whitby – not that you’ll need much reminding, as the Gothic abbey is visible from parts of the site. This spacious site in the small village of Hawsker appeals to both couples and families – and it must be doing something right, as guests often come back year after year. There are two play areas for kids, and also plenty of opportunities for gentle strolls and relaxing in the peaceful surroundings. It’s a canine-friendly place too, with a dedicated dog-walking field. From the site, there’s easy access to the Cinder Track, a 21-mile path along the disused railway from Whitby to Scarborough. Leaving the car behind on your adventures? There's a good bus service from Hawsker to Scarborough in one direction and Middlesbrough in the other. On-site facilities include a well-maintained shower block, a washing-up and laundry room, and – saving the best news for last – a bar and restaurant for those days when you just don’t feel like catering for yourselves (note that during low season, they are only open from Thursday to Sunday). There’s also a local pub five minutes’ walk away, which serves tasty home-cooked food and a good selection of drinks.

Power optional gravel caravan site

Liked Amazing campsite, great facilities, really nice location and relatively quiet. Bus stop and village pub less than 5 minutes walk.

Staff really friendly and welcoming.

Toilets and showers are absolutely fine not the poshest but clean and adequate, cleaned once per day.

Onsite has a bar and café, didn't try as beer choice was not so good but local pub was great.

For touring around the area a 3 day bus pass costs £20 and allows you to travel the coast and inland to the Moors unlimited travel amazing value with regular busses that run to after 11pm.

We did Saltburn, Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay, Scarborough, Goathland (Harry Potter & Heartbeat), Thornton-Le-Dale (Mathewson's) over 2 days all by bus. Great way to take in the landscapes on the top deck of the bus.

Reading the reviews electricity seems to be a negative theme but the shop sells the cards in £1 denominations so not really a problem i used less than £5 over a 3 night stay, and can buy from the onsite pub after shop is closed.

If like me you are in an old slow motorhome I would recommend going via Scarborough on the A614 if you are travelling from the South as the moors road A169 is very challenging with steep 20%+ gradients/declines that seem to go forever, but amazingly scenic if you are brave.

I will be back next year as we have so much to do still.

Disliked Only minor gripes

Build electric costs into the pitch price,
More toilets in the gents as there are only 3.
Possibly clean the toilets twice a day as they can get messy by 10am.
Pushbutton showers which are annoying and cant adjust temperature.

Local attractions

York House Caravan Park is nicely located on the eastern edge of the North York Moors National Park. It's a short drive from here to Robin Hood’s Bay (five minutes’ drive), where ghost walks tell the story of times gone by. For a small taste of the village's smugglers' history, head to the museum. For hikers, there are fine choices around such as the 109-mile Cleveland Way (five minutes) through the North York Moors, and the Coast to Coast Path (five minutes) ending at Robin Hood’s Bay. Those who prefer to travel at higher speeds can take the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from the station in Whitby (10 minutes) – after spending some time exploring the famed abbey, of course. Goathland (20 minutes) is a popular destination – it's the home of the TV series 'Heartbeat' and starred in the Harry Potter films too. There are so, so, so many pretty spots along the coast that you might find it hard to choose where to spend your time. However, Ravenscar (20 minutes), a pretty coastal village with splendid cliffs, and the more ‘happening’ Scarborough (half an hour) are some very nice picks.
