Seaside holiday or a break in a historic town? No need to decide when you book a stay at Brook House Farm, set on clifftops with sea and moorland views, but just 20 minutes’ walk from the centre of Whitby. Here you get the best of both worlds: peace and seclusion on a working farm, and townie attractions like shops, pubs and restaurants close at hand, too. Well insulated against any inclement North Yorkshire weather, the accommodation is in a static caravan sleeping four (in proper beds, too), with living, dining and kitchenette areas, plus plenty of space so you don’t get under each other’s feet. You’ll have excellent North Sea panoramas from the timber decking – there’s also a sheltered gravelled area for catching some sun (when it shows its face) – and the mysterious ruins of Whitby Abbey stand out on the horizon. There is secure private parking at the site, which is at the end of a no-through road. Brook House Farm is surrounded on all sides by green fields and the sea. Your only company here is likely to be the resident pigs, Suzie the friendly sheep and the occasional moggy on pest-control duties.

A ripper little campsite, peaceful with ace sea views and a top coastal walk to Whitby. Paddock's pretty generous, great for a quiet escape. Basic but clean facilities, though the one dunny/shower can get busy. A few reckon a washing-up spot would be grouse. Ideal for a cruisy break with a cracking outlook.

Liked Location was good - walk to Whitby only half an hour.

Disliked Only one toilet and shower, which was combined in the same hut. It was not particularly clean when we stayed. There was an area for chemical waste disposal - signs would be useful saying which hose was drinking water.
I would pay a bit more and stay at the Whitby Holiday Park which was next door.

Liked We had a wonderful stay at this lovely, peaceful campsite. It’s a small, quiet site with beautiful sea views and some very friendly neighbours — a couple of horses, some goats and an especially friendly sheep!
The location is fantastic, with direct access from the site onto the Cleveland Way. We enjoyed a lovely walk along the cliffs to the abbey, which could be seen from the campsite and looked absolutely spectacular when the sun caught it.
Self-check-in was really easy and straightforward. There is just one toilet and shower, but as it’s a small site, this wasn’t an issue at all during our stay.
A beautiful, tranquil spot in a fantastic location. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely return for a longer stay.

Liked For a small site it has everything that's needed for the stay, toilet/shower pod which was cleaned daily and behind it and elsan point and fresh water tap. There is a perfect view to the sea and the monastery ruins overlooking Whitby. Whitby is within walking distance along the coastal path and if you're up to it, and interesting walk in the opposite direction to Robin Hood's Bay.

Disliked Could do with a bigger Brook House Farm sign at the entrance.

Local attractions

The Cleveland Way, a long-distance trail linking Helmsley (in the North York Moors National Park) to Filey Brigg (on the coast) can be accessed from the site. Follow it southwards to reach the pretty village of Robin Hood’s Bay (about an hour and three quarters on foot), where a small museum illustrates the fishing heritage of the area – and its smuggling heritage, too. In Whitby (five minutes’ drive) you can choose to delve into the world of 18th-century exploration at the Captain Cook Memorial Museum, or indulge your passion for Gothic horror at the Dracula Experience and at Whitby Abbey. Speaking of which… check out the view of the abbey’s dramatic hilltop ruins from the opposite bank of the River Esk, where it appears nicely framed by the Whalebone Arch. If there are any Harry Potter enthusiasts in your party, you might want to visit Goathland (20 minutes), the unassuming station of which doubled as Hogsmeade, the terminus for the Hogwarts Express. Goathland is also one of the stations served by the heritage trains run by the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
