  • Thirsk, Helmsley and Rievaulx Abbey within 20 minutes' drive
  • In the North York Moors National Park; excellent pub under a mile away
Several campsites in North Yorkshire can confidently speak of being surrounded by spectacular scenery (this is, after all, a most attractive part of the world…) but there aren't many that have a backdrop of a giant outdoor artwork… That is however, what you’ll get at Church Farm Camping, which is overlooked by the huge Kilburn White Horse, a 97-metre-long figure carved in 1857 and said to be the most northerly hill figure in England. It’s a fabulous view… and one you'll be able to look at all day long from the spacious camping field at this laidback site. The setup here is a simple one, with grass pitches that have access to a pair of toilets but no showers (and in fact no hot water). Barbecues are permitted, and you can stock up on things for the grill at the shops in Thirsk (15 minutes' drive away). If you'd rather eat out, there’s an excellent pub less than a mile away in Kilburn village that serves lunches, dinners and snacks along with a tempting range of afternoon cakes… While the view on site is splendid, it’s likely that you’ll want to get out and see more of your surroundings (this being a location on the edge of the North York Moors National Park and Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty). That should be easily done, as there are several great walking and trails nearby, including the Cleveland Way, which passes about five minutes' drive away as it crosses Sutton Bank.

Unpowered grass caravan site

Liked: Nice little site. Virtually no traffic passing so very peaceful. 2 clean portaloo type toilets. Local pub - good for food 20 minutes stroll away. Walks from site up to the White horse and onto the Cleveland way - trails in the woods aren't signposted so easy to get lost in the woods.

Disliked: Feel it's a bit overpriced at £25 a night as no shower or washing up sink ( which we did know before booking) but nevertheless would stay again for the location.

Unpowered grass caravan site

Liked: This is a lovely campsite! It is simple - a field with two immaculate loos, a standpipe for drinking water and a rubbish bin - and it is charming. It nestles in the valley and feels enclosed, calm, safe, quiet and friendly. The owners were also very nice. The location was great for breaking our journey from Tyneside down to the south. And the horse is amazing!

Unpowered grass and earth tent site

Liked: This was our second visit to Church Farm, it is absolutely gorgeous. Especially this time with the cows visiting! The children loved them. Great views, flat land for pitching, great facilities and good price. Other campers were friendly. The friendly owners make a point of popping round to see if all is ok. What more can you ask!

Disliked: Nothing!

Unpowered grass caravan site

Liked: Wonderful little site in a beautiful area. The site itself is super basic but it doesnt pretend to be anything else. It had a water point, bins and two toilets. The toilets seemed brand new and they were sparkly clean and had plenty soup and toilet roll etc. The owner popped by to say hello (even in the rain!) and she was very lovely and kind and even invited us to an event in the village There's a fantastic pub in the village. We went there for food the first night and we walked past it the second night and my children asked to go and eat there again so we did. food was super tasty and the staff were super friendly

Local attractions

The North York Moors National Park is packed with great walking and bike trails to give you a taste of the scenery. Some of the top spots nearby include the ruins of Byland Abbey (five minutes’ drive) and Rievaulx Abbey (20 minutes), both particularly atmospheric early in the morning or at sunset. If a trip to the countryside isn't complete without seeing some animals, take the kids to Monk Park Farm (10 minutes), where they can bottle-feed lambs (in season), meet the goats and ride a miniature train. Alpaca walks are on the cards at Beacon Alpacas (10 minutes), or you could saddle up for a day on horseback at Bilsdale Riding Centre (25 minutes). For a different kind of animal encounter, head to Thirsk Birds of Prey Centre (25 minutes), stopping by in the town to explore The World of James Herriot museum too. Another town worth visiting is Helmsley (20 minutes), which has a castle and a walled garden.
