What customers say

Great for a quiet country getaway with friendly staff & nice rural views (sheep included!). Handy for Scarborough and coast towns. Downsides? Toilets/showers are pretty basic & can be grubby/blocked. Expect mud after rain.

Liked Wonderful location in the beautiful village of East Ayton, perfect for scenic walks. The camping field is very picturesque, bordered on two sides by the river and a line of trees, providing shelter. It's a short drive in to Scarborough, 40 minutes from Whitby. There's a nice pub, two very reputable fish and chip offerings, a garage with a mini market, cricket club, and picturesque church, all around 15 minutes walk away. We loved the miniature ponies and the mesmerising goats in the adjacent field. They love it if you bring them carrots and are very friendly. This is laid back, no frills camping and I have to say, after spending time at campsites where you always feel you're being watched and that have so many rules, this site is a breath of fresh air. The owner is clearly undertaking a string of improvements to the site. Toilets and showers are basic and are cleaned daily to a good standard. Electric is good, we had no problems whatsoever. You'll need a torch to cross the field at night. It's very quiet at night, and conducive to a good night's sleep. If you like back to basics camping this is for you. If you like it rowdy, go elsewhere as this is loved by and perfect for young families. We've been several times now and everyone has been respectful campers and friendly.
Lizzie is wonderful and works very hard. It's like going back in time. I'm missing it already.

Liked Our second stay here, we loved our first visit so returned 2 years later for a second. The site is alot more inviting now with drive its and appearance. It's in the perfect spot for a peaceful getaway but close to several beaches, dalby forest and the moors. The owner is lovely. The animals are an added bonus I'm certain we will be back again!

Liked Please do not be put off by the bad reviews, we have just spent 3 days here over august bank holiday in a tent. 3 mums new to camping with a 2 year old and 12 weeker! We loved it! I was worried due to previous reviews however we all had a lovely time! Prior to arriving i addressed the negative reviews with the owner who responded promptly to my several emails and reassured us. The staff were there to greet us and very friendly. Yes it’s a no frills site but we couldn't really ask for more. There was hot water, electric hook up and the ground was dry with luscious grass!

Liked We recently stayed at Riverside Campsite and had a fantastic time. The location is great, just 10 minutes from Scarborough and around 30 minutes to Bridlington, making it ideal for exploring the coast.

The site was easy to find, and we had no trouble pitching up. While there were a few animal droppings in the field, it's to be expected in a countryside setting and certainly didn’t affect our stay. In fact, the animals were one of the highlights, the horses, goats, and donkeys were friendly and often came up to the fence, which was lovely, especially for the kids.

The staff were friendly, and the shower and toilet blocks were kept clean throughout our stay. Another unexpected bonus was the scarecrow trail in the village, it was amazing to see the creativity and effort the locals put into their displays. It added a really fun touch to our visit.

We also loved that it was within walking distance to the local pub, which happened to be hosting a charity music festival while we were there – a great atmosphere and a lovely way to spend the evening.

All in all, a relaxing and enjoyable stay, we’d definitely come back!

Local attractions

Sticking close by to start with, anyone who simply can’t get enough of fishing can make the five-minute drive to Wykeham Lakes fishery to land trout, carp, perch and bream, while those who are happiest out in nature should pay a visit to Burton Riggs Nature Reserve (10 minutes' drive) for wanders and birdwatching. Further afield, travels to the coast come highly recommended. It’s 20 minutes from base to the coastal town of Filey, where there are beaches to sprawl or stroll on, plus a museum, an animal park and birdwatching areas. The town’s also the start of the 110-mile Cleveland Way walking trail. A 40-minute drive up the coast leads to Whitby, a coastal town that inspired major elements of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Head this way for more sandy stretches, the spectacularly spooky Whitby Abbey and (during well-timed stays) the Whitby Goth Weekend. If Whitby Abbey inspired an interest in seeing more stunning old buildings, there are plenty nearby to choose from: it’s 35 minutes to Burton Agnes Hall and Sewerby Hall, 40 minutes to the marvellous Castle Howard (featured in Brideshead Revisited) and 50 minutes to Rievaulx Abbey.
