  • Shepherds hut with spectacular views over Rosedale valley
  • Lots of walking trails pass the site, including the Rosedale Railway
  • Scenic tearoom on site; breakfast hamper included in stays
Dale Head Farm Shepherds Hut is a working hill farm tucked snugly at the head of Rosedale on the edge of the North York Moors. If you’re into tea and cake, then you’ll be well placed for both here, as the farm is famed among walkers for its viewsome tea garden, who go there for views over Rosedale valley and slices of proprietor Maggie’s homemade cake. The surroundings and skies here are made for gazing – peer across the moorland valley and settle back into your deckchair as the sun sets. Then, as night closes in, pull a blanket over your knees and stay cosily parked, for there are plenty of stars to spy too. Barbecues are provided – just remember to bring your own coal. When you’re feeling spritely, long ambles, road or mountain bike rides and horseback hacks are how to explore the land around the farm – if you’re more of a sedentary sort, birdwatching and wildlife spotting are popular alternative activities. The hut is comfy and warm with a woodburner to keep you toasty – in fact, while the rest of the year the area is popular with mountain bikers, during snowy weather the steep hills around here are spot on for speedy sledge rides. Whatever the weather, the pretty little arbour by the hut is a top spot to hang out in: you'll surely be snug here as you cosy up with a coffee or a glass of vino… The site has been kitted out thoughtfully with stuff that’s handy for outdoorsy types, like a utility room with washers and dryers, as well as facilities to repair and lock up bikes. Handily for horsey peeps, the hut sits in its own paddock too, providing ample space for horses to stay. Next to the hut is a wetroom with a toilet and shower, plus a standard fridge, worktops, an air fryer and a large sink. A breakfast hamper with items like porridge, a flapjack, juice and croissants is included in the stay.

Rosedale Light shepherd's hut

Liked The location is fantastic, its on a working farm on the bank of a hill facing the beautiful north yorkshire moors.
Its a perfect get away tucked away from normality.
When we arrived we were greeted by maggie who was very friendly and welcoming. After a quick tour and a chat we settled in very quickly, the hut was very warm and homely with every thing you needed and more, it even had a good wifi. Theres a good size patio area with a table and chairs which we used for breakfast which was provided with the stay and was very nice and fresh.
There are facilities which are next to the hut which include toilet, shower, wash up area fridge, air fryer, toaster, kettle and all the kitchen essentials including tea, coffee. Everything is clean and well maintained. On an evening it gets so dark and peaceful, the hut had its garden lights and which feels really nice.
The bed was so comfy, i can wait to return in the colder months as i want to use the log burner.
We will definatly make this a more than once stay as its perfect

Rosedale Light shepherd's hut

Liked Maggie was really helpful and friendly. Everything was as described. Large shower/toilet and hot water. The hut is really cosy with its own outdoor sheltered seating area and bbq to chill out, absorb the countryside and the farming activities. A convenient stop on the coast to coast walk.

Rosedale Light shepherd's hut

Liked What a fabulous place to stay (my favourite of all accommodations during our C2C trek across northern England). The hut was very comfortable (including bed, which was large enough for 2), with many windows that opened for airflow and all the windows had coverings so that we could sleep. It was next to a lamb enclosure, which added to the enjoyment of our stay. We could watch the horse across the way, listen and watch the large variety of birds, and had a full bathroom next door. The basket breakfast was substantial and wonderful. The hut was in an enclosed space for max privacy and the views were just beautiful. We were also able to purchase a couple of baked delights from the Tea Garden across the lane just prior to closing, that we enjoyed with coffee to close out a long day of walking. Paradise!

Disliked Absolutely nothing.

Local attractions

Rosedale is a serene and spectacular spot in the midst of the North York Moors National Park; Dale Head Farm Shepherds Hut lies right at the top of Rosedale valley on the eastern side, and is passed by several walking trails (like along the Rosedale Railway) for easy access to the surrounding countryside. Should your fancy be a day trip to somewhere historic, York and its famed cathedral and Jorvik Viking Centre is just over an hour south of the site. The coast is close enough for a spin out to too, reachable in around 45 minutes by car: head to Whitby and sample a scoop of its famed blackcurrant and liquorice ice cream.
