Buttercup lodge – and some neighbours
On the farm

  • Small East Yorkshire glamping site on a family farm in Octon
  • Bridlington and Filey beaches 20 minutes' drive away
  • Smart and cosy ensuite log cabins with kitchenette and deck area
Seaside days, scenic country walks… and a splendid dose of luxury – it’s all here at Old Octon Farm Lodges, a small East Yorkshire glamping site that’s part of a working farm in the village of Octon, 20 minutes from the coast at Bridlington and Filey. The surroundings here are all pretty pastures and open skies, so it’s just the location for a relaxing time spent soaking up the fresh air, sunset watching and stargazing. There are several pubs and restaurants in local villages, with more places to eat in Driffield (15 minutes’ drive), which also has a supermarket for supplies to take back to base. Whatever you source in the shops can go into meals prepped inside or outside your lodge – each of the smartly kitted-out lodges has a kitchenette (with microwave, fridge, kettle, toaster, cutlery and crockery provided) and a dining area, plus a barbecue area outside for alfresco eating. The table and chairs on the deck at the front of the lodge are in just the right spot for breakfast in the morning sun too… Everything here has been designed with a luxurious experience in mind – from the rainfall shower in the bathroom to the sparkling wine and chocolates provided as welcome gifts. Each lodge also has a Freesat TV and wifi, plus central heating, double glazing and insulation to keep everything cosy. These are family-friendly lodges, and dogs are also welcome as long as they are added to your booking in advance and not left in your lodge on their own at any time.

Rivers lodge

Liked: Absolutely beautiful, immaculate and very clean. We had a lovely time and visited Robin Hoods bay, Scarborough and Whitby as not far for all. Mandy and her husband were lovely and very welcoming! Lovely touch leaving a box of chocolates too! Definitely recommend here and will be returning.

Shepherd's View lodge (no pets)

Liked: Spacious, immaculately clean lodges with absolutely everything provided, right down to a wide range of indoor/outdoor games and activies for children. Loved the welcome pack including milk (and chocolates!) so we could make a cuppa as soon as we arrived. The hosts were so kind and welcoming, taking time to show our two boys around the farm/bottle feed the lambs and answer their questions. Gorgeous views from the cabin and incredibly peaceful site whilst only being 20/30 mins drive from the coast. We literally can't fault this place and will definitely be returning in the future.

Buttercup lodge

Liked: Sorry Mandy and David, for taking so long to post this review.
We stayed for three nights in Buttercup and can say with all sincerity it was one of, if not the best glamping experiences we have had, and we've had plenty.
From arrival to leaving, we felt like old friends, Mandy and David greeted us on arrival and instantly made us feel welcome and relaxed.
Our first impressions of Buttercup were nothing but positive, the Lodge was very well appointed and the layout was ideal with a feeling of cosy and still spacious.
We later found out that the lodges were built by David, which makes you realise how much has been personally invested into the business given that both Mandy and David are running a farm business as well, the lodges and surrounding hedges and grass areas are immaculately maintained, each with a feeling of privacy.
A highlight was being able to help bottle feed one of the lambs that were in the field facing the lodges.
The location is peaceful and just off the beaten track, so take provisions (kindly there was fresh milk in the fridge on arrival), this is not a city centre, that being said a 20 min drive will bring you to Driffield or Bridlington and just over 30 mins will get you to beautiful Beverley.

To sum up, you can't beat a bit of God's country, and a proper Yorkshire welcome.

Thank you so much Mandy and David, we will be back again and again.👍

Have already recommended to two family members and they've both booked.

Disliked: That anyone could find fault with it.

Shepherd's View lodge (no pets)

Liked: Just back from a lovely 2 night stay in the Shepherd's View Lodge. The Lodge was spotless and extremely well equipped with everything we needed and more. The owners are very welcoming and made my son extremely happy by inviting him to bottle feed the adorable lambs. We took advantage of the nice weather with a bbq and a few games of the swing ball provided. We were sad to leave such a peaceful and beautiful place. Hope to return soon 😀

Rivers lodge

Liked: -Very cosy!
-Well equipped with nice bedding and plenty of crockery and utensils
-Games and colouring provided for kids, as well as chocolates for us all
-The hosts were absolutely lovely and took the kids into the field to see the lambs, and showed them inside one of the tractors too
-Peaceful setting, with sheep right across from the lodges

Disliked: Only thing was the futon in Rivers Lodge was puffier on one side than the other when opened out, so it was a bit tricky for the kids to stay on their sides! The fold-out table was a bit bulky to move too and was getting caught on the lino, so maybe something more lightweight or with wheels would work better in the space.

Location wise you do have to prepare a bit as there are no shops nearer than a 15-min drive.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: It was lovely to meet you all glad you enjoyed your stay. The sofa bed in Rivers doesn't get used that much has a bed so I think that is why one side is a little bit puffier than the other, but thank you for suggesting wheels on the table we have now put wheels on all the tables and it is a lot easier to mover. In the description of the cabin and the location I think we do state that we are about 15-20 minutes away from locations and shops.

Shepherd's View lodge (no pets)

Liked: What a hidden gem! We booked for a short getaway and ended up extending our stay. The lodges have everything you could need to settle in and relax in luxury and comfort. We got the best sleep we have had in a long time and spent the days resting and watching the sheep. The owners are absolutely lovely and couldn’t do enough to ensure a good stay.

We have definitely found our happy place and will be back later this year and beyond.

Disliked: Not a single complaint.

Local attractions

Here in the Yorkshire Wolds there’s plenty of lovely scenery to explore, whether you head out on foot, get on your bike, or take a seat on the Yorkshire Wolds Railway (15 minutes' drive). You may also like to have a stroll around a couple of local stately homes at Sledmere House (10 minutes), which has a farm park and adventure playground, or Burton Agnes Hall (15 minutes), known for its art collection and craft shops. And of course you’ll want to get over to the coast as well – perhaps for days on the beach in Filey or Bridlington (both 20 minutes), a bit of birdwatching at RSPB Bempton Cliffs (25 minutes) or a trip to the gorgeous Robin Hood’s Bay (55 minutes). The beach and open-air theatre make Scarborough (half an hour) worth a visit too. If you’ve got kids to entertain, a tour of Bondville Model Village (20 minutes) should be on the schedule. If, however, it’s an adults-only trip, might you perhaps be interested in a tour and tasting at Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery (15 minutes)?
