  • Adults-only site on 12 acres of peaceful Suffolk farmland
  • Woodbridge 10 minutes' drive; 20 minutes to Ipswich or Sutton Hoo
  • Dogs welcome; pubs and River Deben beach within walking distance
With easy access from the A12 and A14, plus 12 acres of peaceful natural land to its name, Low Farm Campsite is an excellent spot for an easy escape in a splendid Suffolk setting. This lovely location is part of the Suffolk & Essex Coast & Heaths National Landscape, and the owners of the site are doing their bit to preserve the local landscapes by returning their farmland to nature. As part of that approach, the guest areas have been designed to sit nicely in the natural setting, with plenty of space so that you’ll never feel crammed in even if the place is full. The idea here is to create peaceful, simple experiences, and with that in mind the owners have set the place up as an adults-only site with just the essential facilities – guests have access to toilets, showers, a washing-up area and a chemical disposal point. Dogs are welcome as long as they’re kept on a leash on site – the area’s footpaths and open spaces mean you shouldn’t struggle to find a place for a good walk (whether you’ve got a dog or not). You’re allowed to set up a barbecue here if you’d like to do some outdoor cookery, but there are also a couple of pubs within walking distance serving up good food for those times when you don’t feel like it. Also within easy walking distance is a river beach on the River Deben, with boat trips available. Woodbridge (10 minutes’ drive) and Ipswich (20 minutes) are also close by for shops and places to eat.

What customers say

Chilled, adult-only site with spacious, wild pitches. Spotless loos & showers. Great for walks, near a pub. Easy check-in. Busy showers at peak times & patchy Wi-Fi noted.

Liked The peacefulness of the site. Cleanliness of the toilet block

Disliked Having the showers in a different block
to the toilets and basins.
No hot water for washing dishes in the morning.
Dustbin lorry arriving at 22.15 at night to empty bins, making a huge amount of noise.

Liked Nice quiet campsite, not too far from the pub on the estuary. Nice clean facilities.

Disliked Would benefit from having a small farm shop as it’s a bit of a drive to a supermarket.

Liked We enjoyed our stay at Low Farm and the site is in a lovely, quiet rural location. Overall, the site is pleasant but could do with some basic maintenance. We particularly liked the wild camping/non-electric area, which felt much nicer and more spacious than the electric pitch area.

We stayed on an EHU pitch, and there are a few things worth being aware of. The EHU pitches are quite close together, with pitches 11 and 12 being particularly close — they are practically on top of each other with only three or four sparse young trees providing separation. The EHU area also felt considerably dustier than the wild camping area. We appreciate that our stay coincided with a prolonged heatwave and that the grass had understandably died back, but there were some large areas of bare dust, and unfortunately our pitch was one of these.

Although the site itself is in a quiet location, the EHU pitches are relatively close to a road and, on occasion, there were some extremely loud cars going past, which did disturb the otherwise peaceful setting.

The showers are good-sized and spacious, but a few simple additions would make them much more practical. Each shower really needs a small shelf and mirror, and ideally its own mop or squeegee. There are around eight showers but only one mop, which went missing halfway through our stay, meaning there was no way to clean the shower area after use.

The toilet blocks could also benefit from somewhere to hang or put toiletries and clothes while getting ready, as on many occasions campers had spread their belongings across several basins whilst brushing their teeth etc.

One other consideration, particularly if you are staying with dogs, is the road into the village. It is quite busy, and some vehicles pass very close to the edge of the road, making the walk into the village feel a little uncomfortable and difficult to navigate safely with dogs.

Overall, we had a pleasant stay and think the site has a lot going for it, particularly its rural setting and the wild camping area. With a few relatively small improvements to the EHU pitches and shower/toilet facilities, we would have rated our experience more highly.

Wildlife unpowered grass site

Liked Loved the peace and quiet and the layout of the wild area so the spaces felt quite secluded. Very green. All the basics done very well and no frilly extras which is what I like. Especially liked the freezer to refreeze my blocks.

Disliked Bit of a long walk to the toilets from some areas.

Local attractions

Works by Constable and Gainsborough are among the highlights of the art collection at the 16th-century Christchurch Mansion, just north of the town centre in Ipswich (20 minutes' drive). Restaurants and bars line the redeveloped Ipswich Waterfront, where it’s also possible to go on boat trips along the River Orwell. Discovered in 1939, the burial ground at National Trust - Sutton Hoo (20 minutes) yielded an Anglo-Saxon warrior’s boat grave laden with precious artefacts, from an ornate helmet to intricate gold jewellery and gemstones. Most of the treasure is now in London’s British Museum, but there are replicas here, plus a tower to survey the burial ground from above. Fancy a little water-based action? Head to Alton Water Sports Centre (25 minutes), where you can have a go at paddleboarding, hire a canoe to explore this large reservoir, or bounce and slide on the inflatables at the water park. Alton Water also has a couple of fishing spots, bird hides and viewpoints.
