  • Suffolk farm site with coastal views 20 minutes’ walk from Southwold
  • Africa Alive 15 minutes’ drive and Pleasurewood Hills 25 minutes
  • Petting barn, padel court and pub; 20 minutes’ walk from the beach
A stay at the Suffolk seaside? And a short drive from Southwold? What’s not to love? Especially at Pigs in Blankets, an off-grid site scattered across a six-acre meadow on a working livestock farm. It’s only 20 minutes’ walk into the lively seaside Southwold for pubs and supermarkets (and the cool shops on its high streets), and during reception hours between May and August, you can buy locally sourced meat, milk, eggs and ice cream from the fridge and freezer on site. The focal point of the site is The Straw Shed, a renovated Dutch barn hosting amenities from washing-up sinks, shower and toilet facilities to ping pong and a coffee machine. From Wednesday to Sunday, take the kids to the petting barn for some time with the animals. The on-site Pigs Padel court is open every day from early morning to late evening – and if it’s open (hours vary throughout the season), you could settle in for a drink afterwards at the on-site Grain Shed bar. While on your pitch, you’ll have constant views of the farm animals, the neighbouring wildfowl marshland and the scenic Suffolk coastline. A golf course is within walking distance, Lowestoft is 25 minutes’ drive to the north and if you carry on up the coast, it’s an extra 15 minutes into Great Yarmouth.

What customers say

Great vibe, handy spot for Southwold & beach. Good facilities, staff are legends. Pitches are massive. Minor whinges: patchy Wi-Fi, a few more water taps for non-electric spots, and sometimes not enough loos when it's chockers.

Unpowered grass motorhome site

Liked Quirkiness of the site, unusual but nice

Disliked Shower floor tray could have been cleaner. A wire tray for soap and shampoo would be useful

Unpowered grass motorhome site

Liked Easy check in, we arrived late but I let them know and they sent me instructions on what to do
Pitch sizes excellent. We camped on Non electric pitch we got our camper & two cars on pitch
Facilities excellent only 3 showers in each & 3 loos but we didn’t find it too long to wait.
Pizza van there on weekends was tasty.
Bar onsite a great addition
Table tennis in barn & a fridge with essentials to buy in reception opening hours
Also a fridge for ice packs etc
15 minutes walk to pier end of southwold via a footpath on campsite
Dogs are welcome
We had an amazing weekend here and will return. Hoping to return with granddaughter and check out the little farm onsite.
WiFi onsite but didn’t reach to our pitch

Disliked Rather pricey compared to other campsites
A water tap nearer the non electric pitches would have been better

Meadow unpowered grass tent site

Liked This is our third visit and we had previously enjoyed the peaceful location with no cars allowed on the camping field.

Disliked The noise from the new padel court went on until after 10pm.
Other campers complained that there were not enough toilets when large, group bookings had been allowed.
The accessible loo and washbasin had no soap, unlike the others.
Campers had separated their recycling but when collected, it all went into the same truck.

Local attractions

It’s a mere 20 minutes’ walk into the upscale seaside resort of Southwold to languish on the beach, eat fish and chips on the pier and take a tour of the local brewery-cum-distillery, where there are beers, gins and whiskies to be sampled, plus the chance to join masterclasses in cocktail-making. There are family adventures to be had at Africa Alive (15 minutes’ drive), the sprawling home of rare rhinos, lions and giraffes, and when you’re after something a little bit different, take a camel trek or feed the friendly alpacas, ponies and goats at Camel Park Oasis (half an hour). If you prefer to see wildlife actually in the wild, the Suffolk Coast National Nature Reserve wetlands around cute Walberswick village (15 minutes) are rich in birdlife, otters and deer. The kids might also enjoy the Southwold Maize Maze (five minutes), where they can negotiate their way out of the maze, take tractor rides and whizz down zipwires. More hardcore action required? Try the rollercoasters and waterslides at Pleasurewood Hills Family Theme Park (25 minutes).
