Happy campers enjoying the site

  • Friendly, well-maintained site just outside Mundesley, north Norfolk
  • Cromer 20 minutes’ drive; Norwich 40 minutes
  • Pub, supermarket and other amenities within a mile
Pick a pitch at Hayfield Hideaways if you want to be close to some of the most splendid parts of Norfolk’s north coast. Surrounded by natural scenes and within easy walking distance (15 minutes, via a footpath) of the traditional village of Mundesley (and its beach), this site is also a five-minute walk from a bus stop where you can catch the Norfolk Coasthopper. It really couldn’t be easier to leave the car behind. Hayfield Hideaways is a family-run business that welcomes well-behaved kids and waggy-tailed friends. This is the sort of place to head to if you’re after a simple rural escape surrounded by lots of open space. In addition to a level grass field, the well-maintained site has a good range of basic services, with two toilets and two showers, plus other handy facilities like waste disposal points. After a long day exploring what’s on offer in the surrounding area – from North Sea beaches to the Norfolk Broads (half an hour’s drive) – you can relax at your pitch over a barbecue or head towards Mundesley, where there’s a variety of spots to eat including pubs, restaurants and fish and chip shops. Other amenities – a supermarket, butcher’s shop, ice-cream parlour and fruit and veg shop – are within a mile of the site.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked This was our second time staying on site. The first was around 5 years ago as a couple, and this time with our 10 month old. We loved it so much the first time, we knew we wanted to come back again, but, life happened. We finally made it back and loved it as much as the first time. It’s clear the site is well looked after, as the facilities were still looking great. Each pitch is clearly cut out, leaving in between with long grass and what was once I’d imagine wildflowers. Each pitch is generously sized, and clearly marked. We love that you can have your car right by the tent, as some places we’ve stayed you’ve had to park elsewhere and lug all your stuff to your pitch. The field is beautiful, with natural hedgerows and trees. It’s clear a lot of thought has gone into this, seeing the younger trees having been planted. There’s lots of birds around, and we loved using our bird identification app to name them. At night, there were bats flying, which was great to watch too. The area is quiet, and the site is small so noise is minimal. We could see lots of stars too, so there’s little light pollution. The toilets and showers are clean and easy to use, with lights inside. The showers kept a fairly consistent temp and felt spacious (helpful when trying to wash a sand covered baby!). Toilet roll and hand towels were provided in the toilets also. Overall, we loved our stay and hope to come back each year with our growing boy!

Disliked Nothing we disliked, but it would be nice to have mirrors in the toilets. A hook would also be helpful as when going to the toilet and shower in one trip from your pitch, there’s nowhere to put your stuff.

Liked Lovely secluded pitches, however our view would have changed if someone was on the plot next to us. Plot 22 offered a lovely view of rolling fields. Toilets, showers and washing up areas were really close by and others could see if you were there so turn taking worked well. Lovely winding paths to walk the dogs to the main road and beech. Not lit up at night so stars were spectacular! Owners greeted us. They were helpful and informative about the area (as were the notice boards) and did a nightly walk around but weren't intrusive. Quiet and peaceful stay. We'd definitely go again.

Disliked Electric hook up would have been nice as this cut down how long we could stay and we'd have happily stayed the week! Water buckets for BBQs need to be changed regularly as lots of insects were in them. Just a niggle, not a complaint of any sort. We loved the place!

Local attractions

The lively programme at the Pavilion Theatre in Cromer (20 minutes’ drive) includes tribute musical acts, stand-up comedy sessions and dance nights. The theatre occupies the tip of the town’s Victorian pier, where there are also a handful of dining options. Take a leisurely walk along the beach before climbing the Doctor’s Steps up to North Lodge Park. Felbrigg Hall, Gardens and Estate (20 minutes) is a National Trust country house with elegant interiors decorated with delicate wallpaper (including hand-printed examples), paintings and handmade furniture. Aromatic herbs grow in the pretty walled garden, while the grounds include a vast area of woodland. In Norwich (40 minutes), take a trip back to the Middle Ages as you stroll along Elm Hill, a cobbled street lined with half-timbered buildings. Or visit Norwich Cathedral, with its splendid vaulted cloister, where you can meditate as you walk along the central grass labyrinth. There are views of the River Wensum’s leafy banks from St George’s St Bridge.
