  • Modern holiday park on the border between England and Wales
  • Oswestry and Wrexham within 15 minutes' drive; Chester 30 minutes
  • Dog-friendly site with all-weather pitches; pub five minutes' walk
Entertaining the idea of a cross-border break? For comfy hols on the England–Wales border, take a look at Foxtail Holiday Park, a modern site a couple of minutes' walk from the Llangollen Canal. Even savvy locals would be forgiven for being outfoxed by the geography around here, as this green agricultural landscape straddles the border in ways that make it difficult to keep up with which country you're in (any Cymraeg on the road signs is often a helpful clue). And letting yourself lose your bearings isn't without appeal in this part of the world – crisscross the surrounding terrain along the Llangollen Canal or Offa's Dyke Path if you fancy days of rambling (both are clearly signposted, so there's little chance of getting properly lost). Back at base, this well-kept park has an array of attractive all-weather pitches where you can settle down and relax after days of adventuring. Toilets, showers, disabled facilities, drainage points for tourers and free superfast wifi are all mightily handy to have. The on-site bar is open from 3pm on Fridays and Saturdays when you want to unwind or have a social drink, while fuss-free dinners can be fixed at the traditional inn five minutes' walk down the road. Foxtail Holiday Park also has the plus of being dog-friendly. Need a supermarket, leisure centre or takeaway? Oswestry and Wrexham are both within 15 minutes' drive.

Fully-serviced gravel caravan site (premium, maximum 7 metres)

Liked Location - great location, 2 min walk from Llangollen Canal, Chirk Aqueduct. Short drive to Chirk castle and Pontcysyllte Aqueduct

Friendly and responsive - lovely staff, friendly. I called ahead as we were arriving after 6pm & Mandy was super helpful checking us in.

Pitches - spacious gravel pitches, pretty flat with EHU and water. It was really hot on arrival but were able to switch to shaded pitch, more comfy for dog

Cleanliness - bin store was clean as were bathroom. Bathroom area needs a little TLC but on the whole were clean

Facilities - onsite bar, laundry and washing up area. Spacious showers with accessible shower cubicle.

Wifi - good

Disliked Generally not a lot to dislike but some points to consider -

Dusty - it got a little dusty when a car drove by our pitch and lifts the dust

*Noise - lots of people mentioned noise in previous reviews. You can hear traffic and it was busier on Friday ( we arrived) and quieter on Saturday. It didn’t bother us and we both slept well in our campervan.

Showers - not all cubicles had hooks, i took my own to hang over the door. The shower head need replacing

Fully-serviced gravel caravan site (premium, maximum 7 metres)

Liked When entering the site, we were very impressed with the landscape. Very clean and tidy.
When booking in the girl in reception was very pleasant and helpful, explained which pitch we were on. It was good to have electric, water and grey waste on our pitch
Toilets and showers were always very clean.
Free WiFi was great to have.
Great to have Dobbies garden centre and shops, also The Poachers pub within walking distance.

Disliked Road noise was quite intrusive but we had seen reviews so expected it.
The pitches seemed quite close to one another.
Only 3 ladies showers, no hooks to hang clothes etc on in 2 of them so articles got wet.

Fully-serviced gravel caravan site (premium, maximum 7 metres)

Liked Firstly the hosts of the site were extremely friendly and couldn't do enough to help with anything. The site was extremely clean and well maintained with really nice amenities. Plenty to do off site with lovely canal walk.

Disliked Pub was open for the England game, however unfortunately not open on the Sunday afternoon or evening. However not sure if this was due to no many people on site being a Sunday. The site backs onto the main road, so if you want bird song and the sound of wind passing through the trees probably not fot you.

Local attractions

Longing for the outdoor life? Rafters can hire a craft and splash their way down the rapids at Llangollen (15 minutes' drive), a pretty village in the foothills of the Berwyn Mountains. Those with courage left to spare can abseil, walk through gorges or clamber over rocks at the place's couple of outdoor activity centres; there's also scope for more relaxing rides aboard a volunteer-run heritage railway and horse-drawn jaunts in a restored barge. The ancient town of Chester (30 minutes) is also close if you're up for a change of scene – with museums, Roman remains and one of the finest zoos in all of England, there's a lot here to please any curious kids you've brought along. Additional hands-on activities can be sorted with a trip to Wrexham's Xplore Science Discovery Centre (15 minutes), where live science demos should put a sparkle in any budding boffin's eye. Other likeable local spots include engineering triumphs such as Chirk Aqueduct (20 minutes' walk) and Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (10 minutes' drive) or historic houses like Chirk Castle (10 minutes) and Plas Newydd (15 minutes).
