  • Well-maintained site in a peaceful location on a horse-racing course
  • A 10-minute drive from historic Ludlow and the Shropshire Hills
  • Horse-race meetings and rallies organised on occasion
All bets are on for a brilliant time at Ludlow Racecourse, a fab choice for folk fond of having a flutter on the horses. Not that you need to be an equestrian expert to stay here – it’s also a popular place for using as a base to shuffle around these rural Shropshire surrounds. Ludlow, a top town with a regular farmers’ market and your gateway to wanders in the Welsh Marches, is a 10-minute drive away. On a practical level, having Ludlow so close to base is also handy as the town is home to supermarkets, restaurants and a railway station. The cycling’s also excellent around here, so hop into the saddle for rides through the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the edges of which are accessible in about 25 minutes by bike (or 10 minutes by car). Well-behaved dogs are allowed to stay on the grounds here, so you can relax while your fave animal sits by your side at your well-maintained pitch. Please note that Ludlow Racecourse has a clean and tidy toilet block, but guests will need to look elsewhere for shower facilities.

What customers say

This quiet country spot has cracker racecourse views. Handy to a farm shop & golf club with a pub, plus easy access to water & clean loos. Some found signage & comms lacking, a few noted bugs in the loos & train noise. No showers, but folks knew before booking.

Unpowered grass and gravel caravan site

Liked Location was good - walking distance to The Clive Arms - lovely, welcoming pub/hotel. The site is also very convenient for exploring Ludlow

Toilets were clean and well lit.

Although the site is not well signposted, when we called the number in the booking confirmation we got excellent, clear instructions on where to go.

Disliked The trains and the noise of traffic from the A49. Not sure how this can be described as a peaceful rural site given trains going past pretty much all night (except between about 2am and 6am) and so much noise from the main road

Unpowered grass and gravel caravan site

Liked We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the racecourse it was easy to find clean facilities you could arrive when you wanted to and leave on the day of departure at a reasonable time. We were there for the food festival and were able to get a bus from the main food straight into Ludlow- Perfect.
Friendly bar close by on the golf course (non members welcome)

Unpowered grass and gravel caravan site

Liked The provision of water and access to toilets as we were not expecting this. Met the Racecourse Groundsman Tom who kindly told us we could catch the Ludlow bus by the local Farmshop just up the road.

Disliked The campsite sign stated that the Elsan point was in the carpark as you enter the racecourse... we walked round the carpark several times and could not find it. Not a problem for a one night stop as we simply took it home!

Unpowered grass and gravel caravan site

Liked Great location, very quiet, clean facilities right next to the race course

Disliked It is near a rail track but it didn't bother us, trains were only during the day about every 30 minutes. Campsite could do with better signposting

Unpowered grass and gravel caravan site

Liked The location - close to the local Farm shop & golf course has a great bar with friendly staff.

Disliked The lack of signage. Reliance on a single flag (these are no good if there is no wind!!! ) No sign in/welcome at site. I felt like I was trespassing.
Toilets were filled with insects - insect spray should be made available in the facilities. I’d only stay again IF the suggestions were noted about the insects.
I’d only recommend to friends IF the suggestions were noted. It’s likely most solo females would feel a bit unsafe to be in this location.

Liked Well maintained and easy to find. Information communicated well.
Really made to feel welcome.
Toilets clean and well looked after. No showers but I was told this before I booked.
Buses run along A49 into Ludlow but can finish early however it’s an easy walk back from town with the option to stop at The Clive Arms for a warm welcome and a lovely pint.

Local attractions

You could start off a trip here by whizzing over to historic hotspots such as Ludlow’s 11th-century castle (10 minutes' drive), set on a cliff above the river Teme. After inspecting the surrounding area from its impressive ramparts, you might like to move on to Stokesay Castle (10 minutes), a historic site with an altogether different vibe as this is a fortified manor house, built by one of medieval England's most powerful wool merchants. Staying in the past, you could explore the agricultural heritage on display at Acton Scott Historic Working Farm (20 minutes), or instead zoom forward a few hundred years to the Industrial Revolution by exploring the Ironbridge Gorge Museum (40 minutes), located in a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the banks of the Severn. If you don't mind roaming slightly further from base, you could visit the famed medieval Mappa Mundi at Hereford Cathedral (40 minutes), let the kids go and say hi to the animals and birds at West Midland Safari Park, take nostalgia-tinged train rides aboard the lovingly preserved Severn Valley Railway in Kidderminster (50 minutes) or head out hiking in the Brecon Beacons National Park (from 45 minutes).
