  • Well-equipped family lodge on a quiet Shropshire park
  • Two miles from Bridgnorth and eight from Ironbridge
  • Fishing and woodland walks on site; activity centre 15 minutes' drive
Family time, fresh air and fishing – sound like a tempting recipe for your hols? Then set forth for the Shropshire countryside and a cosy stay at Woodlands Lodge Park. That family time can be spent out and about exploring your scenic surrounds or cosied up in your smart lodge, which comes kitted out with a well-equipped kitchen, a dining table to gather round and a comfy sofa for TV evenings. If it's a fine day, you might even venture out onto your private deck to soak up a bit of sunshine... The fresh air aspect is up to you: take a wander in the woods just by the park or expand your horizons to lengthy hikes in the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Beauty, around a 20-minute drive away. Rafting, quad biking and kayaking are among the options for more adventurous individuals; steam railway rides and historic amblings in Ironbridge beckon for gentler souls. And the fishing? It's right there on site. Cross the palms of the owners with a few coins and they’ll give you access to their fine fishing lake, stocked with carp, perch, rudd, tench, eels and bream. Successful day at the lake? You’ll need something to toast your skills with. Not so much? Then maybe you’ll need a consolatory drink. Either way, the necessary supplies are two miles away at the pubs and supermarkets of Bridgnorth.

Local attractions

Don’t be thinking of Bridgnorth as just a handy place to pick up food (although the Saturday market is particularly fine for that ). It’s also a splendid place for a stroll, with castle ruins to explore, riverbanks to roam along and a funicular to ride between the two halves of town (a rare sight away from the sea). The town's also the starting point for steam-powered rides on the Severn Valley Railway, and there are more nods to the area’s past over in Ironbridge (20 minutes’ drive). The birthplace of the Industrial Revolution is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and packed with museums including a hands-on science centre, china and iron museums and a living, breathing Victorian town (complete with traditional sweet shop, the small sorts will no doubt be happy to hear). If you’re seeking some outdoorsy action, aim for The Edge Adventure Activity Centre (15 minutes) to get pulses raised with days of clay pigeon shooting, rafting, canoeing and quad biking. Alternatively, give your hiking boots a good old workout with a walk on Wenlock Edge (20 minutes) or a selected chunk of the Shropshire Way (it’s 200 miles long, so you may not want to do that all in one go…).

The Retreat 3 bedroom lodge

Liked: Stayed at the ‘Retreat’ in Bridgnorth, what a beautiful lodge. Loved the location, the decor, the owner was really friendly and helpful before and during our stay, really appreciated the welcome pack of fresh milk etc. the lodge was really clean throughout with lots of amenities within. Perfect bolt hole to visit family. We’ll be back, just sorting dates to re book for later in the year.

The Retreat 3 bedroom lodge

Liked: What a perfect escape staying at The Retreat has been.
We couldn't believe how spacious the lodge was. The open plan dining/kitchen/ sitting room could easily accommodate six adults, but it was cosy too. The kitchen contained everything we needed as well as a special surprise in the fridge.
The three bedrooms all have their own unique character and the beds we used were very comfortable. We slept well!
The double has an en suite and there is a bathroom too.
The veranda overlooking the woodland and fields was just the place to sit out and have breakfast listening to the birdsong as well as being the perfect place at the end of the day to have a glass of wine and watch the sunset.
Everything was exceptionally clean and fresh and well cared for .
Debbie and Phil are a great couple who live nearby, friendly and helpful but not at all invasive.
There was a well stuffed information folder. We had no idea just how interesting this area of Shropshire is and intend to make a return visit with some friends to explore more.
All in all The Retreat is a real gem.

Disliked: Leaving!
