  • Small friendly site 13 miles from Lincoln
  • Level and well-drained site
  • On the Ermine Way and the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Trail
What a handsomely historic location has the hamlet of Byards Leap – for it's between ancient Lincoln and the old market towns of Sleaford, Newark and Grantham, is on an aged Roman road, and is the setting of ye olde Byards Leap legend dating back centuries (Byard was a high-jumping horse, in case you're wondering). And the Knights Templar used to hang out around here too… Folks use The Beeches site in the hamlet as a base to explore historic Lincolnshire or as a stopover enroute to Norfolk or the east coast: plenty of history around in those there parts too. It's a small and friendly site, level, grassy and well drained, with rather nice views over Lincolnshire farmland; access to the Ermine Way is straight from the site. The Beeches has a play area and disabled-friendly amenities a few steps from the pitching area. It's next to the Byards Leap café which dishes up excellent breakfasts and lunches from Thursday to Sunday; a handful of good pubs and restaurants is within a five-mile radius too. Dogs are welcome at The Beeches – and the folk here recommend old Roman road Ermine Street as a top spot for walkies.

What customers say

Family-friendly spot with a top-rated kids' play area and plenty of room. Large, flat pitches are the norm, with clean loos and showers. Owners are super friendly and helpful. A17 road noise is noted but usually manageable. Some say signage and tidiness could improve.

Liked Lovely Park For Children Of All Ages , Grass Well Cut and Surprisingly Quiet On Site Even With Quite A Few Children Seen Etc
Owner seemed lovely and helpful when we spoke to him , fairy lights on the trees were a lovely touch and the toilet block was well lit (could do with more loo roll in the women’s) there is only one shower however it wasn’t overly busy so not a problem
The children enjoyed it so we will definitely be back

Disliked Not Very Well Sign Posted , And Does Look A Little Dingy Driving Into It With Various Broken Down Sheds Etc
There were quite a lot of long term pitches with fences etc and awnings that were growing mould as they had been there a very long time.
Not many walking routes from the campsite other than crossing the big main road which with kids is not something I’d want to try !

Powered grass site

Liked Plenty of hot water, trying to make an effort to tidy site up and make improvements, a noticeable effort whilst there. Very relaxed and helpful, no big list of site rules given. You get what you pay for, the fees were extremely reasonable, included electric and showers.

Disliked Upon arrival it looked very untidy with what looked like unkept residential vans, no signage to direct to site, no heating in toilets or showers, and door constantly held open.

Unpowered grass caravan site

Liked The welcome was amazing. The facilities are brand new. The owners have only just opened up to tourers and are trying hard to welcome new customers. It is right on the Ermine Way so perfect it you are interested in the history, this section of the road is just a chalk path so you do get a sense of the past!

Disliked The pitch is right beside the A17 so quite noisy including through the night. Again, it is a new site to tourers so, although they are genuinely trying hard, there are some refinements yet to make but I am sure they will get there. Better signage for instance would help as we were not sure had arrived at the right place. There is little to keep you on site

Liked Great play area for kids and the facilities were nice - well maintained and clean

Disliked Proximity to main road. A lot of road noise can be heard.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Dear Anonymous, thank you for taking the time to leave a review on our site. We are glad you thought the kids play area was great and the tour facilities are well maintained and clean. Unfortunately, we have no control over the road noise, we have tried to build up the banks to reduce the amount of noise overall but we can only do so much.
We are sorry you felt this was not the site for you.

A ‘gem of a site’.

Unpowered grass caravan site

Liked From the moment we arrived at The Beeches campsite, we were so well looked after: a warm, friendly welcome by Lee and his wife and, on the second day his helpful colleague, Nick - nothing was too much trouble - and all three were informative, interesting and personable.

The pitch was level and set amidst a small natural woodland complete with a lovely well-thought-out play area for children. Toilets, washing and showering facilities were spotless (with hot water in abundance).

Everything we needed was there and for us the location was really helpful. Thank you all so much.

From the manager: Dear Lynn and Kelvin, many thanks for taking the time to leave a review on our site. We do take a lot of thought, time and work to maintain the site and having you tell us that we are doing things right helps us plan and take the site forward in future.
It was our pleasure to provide you with the distraction which albeit helped you say goodbye to a loved one. We loved talking to you both whilst you were with us and we would welcome you back to stay with again.

Very disappointed but with investment has potential to be a nice site.

Liked Orchard effect

Disliked No reception area so contact by phone. Google Maps didn’t know direction to The Beeches postcode sent across road & no brown sign therefore difficult to locate as site at the back of small factory unit. Toilet block needs drastic improvement. Shower tray badly stained so reluctant to use shower. No double door access to female shower & toilet room so no privacy when outer door opens! Cold water in washing up sink but was fixed.

From the manager: Anonymous, thank you for leaving a review on our site. We are glad you liked the orchard effect but there are so many other things about the site you have not covered. We have invested so much time, work and expense into this site and we love this site as others do. We do have a reception area which we are working on but this takes time. Our signage is clear at the bottom of the driveway as our instructions on booking for you arriving.
The toilet block you mentioned has had a complete revamp this year at a considerable amount of time, work and expense. I think we can agree that The Beeches is not for you as it is aimed at families. Perhaps you didn’t see the large amount of children’s play equipment too? I find your review unbalanced and quite unfair. You mark us down very poor on customer service but seemed happy enough talking about your job and links to Henlow? Yes I’m answering this now. Not sure what you expected us to provide as we are open and honest in our descriptions.
I wish we could rate those who visit us too. Seemed happy enough but possibly your mind was made up very early on and all you were able to see was negative? This was never apparent in face to face discussions though which is very unfair. You’ve done the same as a previous negative review in nit picking. I’m highlighting this your expectations were too high as we are not a 5 star service with a 1 star price! In the words of Shakespeare “Expectation is the root of all heartache”. Enough said

We love this site and will definitely be back again

Liked Pitches are a good size. You can park your car right by your tent. Toilets and showers are cleaned regularly. Hot water on tap. Dog friendly, although they do need to be kept on a lead (or tethered to a tree/ground spike). Fire pits and barbeques are welcome. Owners are lovely. The whole place feels really peaceful and safe, with lots of trees. Kids play area is decent - our kids have a whale of a time every time we visit (they love the bikes). Solar lights around the trees make for really easy late night toilet trips!

Disliked Check-in can be a bit of a waiting game if your phone doesn't have enough signal to call the number on the gate, but once it's been seen that you're waiting, someone will be down to let you in pretty quickly.

The kids play area could maybe do with a bit of an update. Our kids loved it, but some of the wooden structures are looking a bit tired and a few of the bikes need some attention. Our kids still loved it though so it's really not anything bad - just a few small tweaks.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Adam, firstly thank you for leaving a review of our site. We do try to accommodate all tastes here and we put a lot of time and effort into maintaining what we have.
We will be updating the kids play area over the winter whilst we are closed. There will be more structures next year and we will be clearing out bikes that need attention as not all children look after these. They are free to use and we will be asking for deposits next year as well as a small fee for the use. Also, some of the bikes have been stolen this year which is why we feel we need to do this.
Our CCTV notifies us of arrivals and we will also have a dedicated reception just next to the gate for next year.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Brilliant site for our first camping trip.. shower block and toilet facilities were spotlessly clean as was the washing up area.. all well maintained throughout the day.. friendly and helpful wardens, we were made to feel very welcome. Play area was a bonus and again plenty for the kids to do. Lovely walks for the dog. Pitch was level, good security and you can rent a firepit and buy logs onsite.. road noise wasnt as bad as some say . Looking at coming back again soon 😀

Liked clean toilet and shower place.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Kai Lin, thank you for leaving a review on our site. We do spend a lot of time cleaning and making sure the toilets and showers are fit and clean for use. However, this weekend we have had children playing in the toilets and left a mess which saddens us. We will be installing extra external lights that come on when people approach the block and also lights on timers which will automatically switch off when not occupied. We look forward to seeing you back at The Beeches.

Local attractions

Pick up details of local walks, cycle routes and town maps as well as leaflets and tourist info on site: there's quite a bit to do all around. A mix of quiet roads and bridleways linking the area's Lincolnshire villages means there's quite a bit to see if you want to get around by foot, pedal or horse. As well as being on the Ermine Way, The Beeches is also on the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Trail and is close to the RAF Cranwell Heritage Centre and the Newark Air Museum. The Newark Showground is nearby too for shows, displays and events. Plenty more history is at Lincoln – see the castle and cathedral if you only have time for two things – and at nearby National Trust properties like Grantham House and Tattershall Castle. Or take trips around Lincolnshire's old towns, like Sleaford, a market town since the twelfth century; Grantham, where Isaac Newton went to school, and Newark, besieged by the roundy-headed ones in the English Civil War.
