  • Small friendly site 13 miles from Lincoln
  • Level and well-drained site
  • On the Ermine Way and the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Trail
What a handsomely historic location has the hamlet of Byards Leap – for it's between ancient Lincoln and the old market towns of Sleaford, Newark and Grantham, is on an aged Roman road, and is the setting of ye olde Byards Leap legend dating back centuries (Byard was a high-jumping horse, in case you're wondering). And the Knights Templar used to hang out around here too… Folks use The Beeches site in the hamlet as a base to explore historic Lincolnshire or as a stopover enroute to Norfolk or the east coast: plenty of history around in those there parts too. It's a small and friendly site, level, grassy and well drained, with rather nice views over Lincolnshire farmland; access to the Ermine Way is straight from the site. The Beeches has a play area and disabled-friendly amenities a few steps from the pitching area. It's next to the Byards Leap café which dishes up excellent breakfasts and lunches from Thursday to Sunday; a handful of good pubs and restaurants is within a five-mile radius too. Dogs are welcome at The Beeches – and the folk here recommend old Roman road Ermine Street as a top spot for walkies.

What customers say

Family-friendly spot with a top-rated kids' play area and plenty of room. Large, flat pitches are the norm, with clean loos and showers. Owners are super friendly and helpful. A17 road noise is noted but usually manageable. Some say signage and tidiness could improve.

Unpowered grass caravan site

Liked This is a relaxed, family friendly site. (Though free range children may not be everyone's idea of fun). There's a small, basic wash block with showers.
It's good value. And was an easy place to stop for a night.

Liked Amazing size pitches and friendly staff. Nice kids playground and close to local shops etc. Small size campsite.

Disliked Set by noisy road. I guess this can't be helped. 2 toilets and 1 shower cubicle for each gender which in busy times meant ques. Due to noisy road next to campsite I would not go back but will be perfect if this does not bother others.

Liked Our stay at the The Beeches was beyond lovely. Facilities were clean and tidy, site was cosy and really clean. Lots of space for our young children to run around and the park/s was lovely - lots of adventures for little people.
Lee the site owner was lovely and really helpful.
Overall - this was an amazing site to stay at. We left feeling happy and will definitely be returning.

Disliked Nothing we really disliked - the only thing I could mention, as this is really just finding something to write - is the toilets were a little cold - but the time of the year influences this.

From the manager: Kim, many thanks for leaving a review on The Beeches. Lee is phenomenal isn’t he! Dawn his wife are two of the best people you can meet and we are justifiably proud of them.
We have taken great pride in the work we have done over the winter months and it is now coming into fruition.
Yes we agree, the toilets were cold when you visited but we do have heaters when it becomes colder to try to avoid this.
We look forward to seeing you all again soon and thank you again for your unbiased review.

Liked Nice place , playground

Disliked Location near road

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Anonymous, thank you for leaving your short review on our site. We do like to think we are a nice place. The playground for children is something we have spent a lot of time and money on improving and this is ongoing. We are predominantly a family site but appreciate you highlighting it a it one of many great features we do have.
Unfortunately, yes we are located quite close to the road we find that this a double edged sword in so many ways. We cannot do anything further about reducing road noise as we have been here for years as has the road. It makes it easier for us to find now we have placed numerous signs to help this too. We’d be pleased to see you back staying with us again as we are continually improving the site and its facilities. Thanks again

Disliked The road was noisy at night and could do with more signs to campsite

From the manager: Robert, thank you for taking the time to leave us your review on The Beeches. We take great pride in what we have achieved as a team since late last year. If mountains could be moved, we have done this.
We do like to talk to 5hose who come to stay with us and we do like to be friendly and approachable and will bend over backwards to resolve a problem if it occurs.
Yes, we are pretty close to the main road and at times it can be quite noisy, we are relatively powerless to control traffic noise however.
We have addressed your point in full putting seven more signs up on roads to let people know where we are.
Thank you again for taking the opportunity to leave an unbiased review as we do welcome constructive feedback.

Liked Lovely Park For Children Of All Ages , Grass Well Cut and Surprisingly Quiet On Site Even With Quite A Few Children Seen Etc
Owner seemed lovely and helpful when we spoke to him , fairy lights on the trees were a lovely touch and the toilet block was well lit (could do with more loo roll in the women’s) there is only one shower however it wasn’t overly busy so not a problem
The children enjoyed it so we will definitely be back

Disliked Not Very Well Sign Posted , And Does Look A Little Dingy Driving Into It With Various Broken Down Sheds Etc
There were quite a lot of long term pitches with fences etc and awnings that were growing mould as they had been there a very long time.
Not many walking routes from the campsite other than crossing the big main road which with kids is not something I’d want to try !

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Kerry, many thanks for leaving a review on our campsite. We do now check the toilets to ensure nothing runs out and have a contact number available to let us know outwith these times.
We have now placed seven extra signs letting people know exactly where we are so this should address your point on this?
As for the acccess road and the dingy sheds yiu mentioned are nothing to do with us as they belong to the landowners and as such we cannot touch them.
We have also addressed the longer term pitches ensuring owners keep, clean and maintain their vans, awnings and we now have a system in place to ensure this is kept right.
Yes, unfortunately we do not have any easily accessible walking routes from the site. We do now have a full compliment of walking and cycling brochures available and we are in the process of making PDFs for everyone to access but this taking some time to complete.
We look forward to welcoming you back to The Beeches when you will see a noticeable difference. Thank you

Liked Plenty of hot water, trying to make an effort to tidy site up and make improvements, a noticeable effort whilst there. Very relaxed and helpful, no big list of site rules given. You get what you pay for, the fees were extremely reasonable, included electric and showers.

Disliked Upon arrival it looked very untidy with what looked like unkept residential vans, no signage to direct to site, no heating in toilets or showers, and door constantly held open.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Gordon, firstly thank you for leaving a review on our site. We have been very busy over the closed season upgrading and improving the site overall. We are very reasonable as far as fees go and we do like to give the personal touch in dealing with people.
The site maybe was untidy but rest assured it is not now as we have ensured that seasonal vans are regularly cleaned and pitches kept tidy. For us keeping the site maintained is key and we are on top of this. We have also put up seven signs in total on the local roads indicating where we are. We now have a reception building where campers book in and are allocated their pitches.
As we are open March to October, we do have heaters but find that the shower block is hot enough especially in the weather we are currently experiencing. We do also have signs up asking peop,e to switch off lights when finished and close toilet doors but some seem to miss this. We feel we are heading in the right direction and do take onboard your comments seriously and feel if you were to visit the site today, you’d see quite a change. Thanks again

We will definitely stay again as an overnighter.

Unpowered grass caravan site

Liked The welcome was amazing. The facilities are brand new. The owners have only just opened up to tourers and are trying hard to welcome new customers. It is right on the Ermine Way so perfect it you are interested in the history, this section of the road is just a chalk path so you do get a sense of the past!

Disliked The pitch is right beside the A17 so quite noisy including through the night. Again, it is a new site to tourers so, although they are genuinely trying hard, there are some refinements yet to make but I am sure they will get there. Better signage for instance would help as we were not sure had arrived at the right place. There is little to keep you on site

From the manager: Robert, thank you for posting your review on our site. We do like to remain sympathetic to our surroundings and many have described our site as rustic. We do pride ourselves in the welcome we provide when people first arrive and ask if anything is not to their satisfaction that we will rectify this. We are human after all.
Yes, we agree on the road noise can be pretty loud at times and we have done everything possible to reduce this but it is now outwith our control. The signs we now have in place as we recognised that this needed resolving quickly. We also have a new reception building as on arrival, we process these and it is manned when people are arriving. We are continually updating and maintaining everything possible but are glad we upgraded the toilet block in the winter months and now it is a key feature. Yes we do not have anything entertainment wise to keep people onsite but instead we concentrated on families and invested in play park equipment which is being well utilised this weekend and as soon as it was ready and safe to use. Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review.

Liked Great play area for kids and the facilities were nice - well maintained and clean

Disliked Proximity to main road. A lot of road noise can be heard.

From the manager: Dear Anonymous, thank you for taking the time to leave a review on our site. We are glad you thought the kids play area was great and the tour facilities are well maintained and clean. Unfortunately, we have no control over the road noise, we have tried to build up the banks to reduce the amount of noise overall but we can only do so much.
We are sorry you felt this was not the site for you.

Liked From the moment we arrived at The Beeches campsite, we were so well looked after: a warm, friendly welcome by Lee and his wife and, on the second day his helpful colleague, Nick - nothing was too much trouble - and all three were informative, interesting and personable.

The pitch was level and set amidst a small natural woodland complete with a lovely well-thought-out play area for children. Toilets, washing and showering facilities were spotless (with hot water in abundance).

Everything we needed was there and for us the location was really helpful. Thank you all so much.

From the manager: Dear Lynn and Kelvin, many thanks for taking the time to leave a review on our site. We do take a lot of thought, time and work to maintain the site and having you tell us that we are doing things right helps us plan and take the site forward in future.
It was our pleasure to provide you with the distraction which albeit helped you say goodbye to a loved one. We loved talking to you both whilst you were with us and we would welcome you back to stay with again.

Local attractions

Pick up details of local walks, cycle routes and town maps as well as leaflets and tourist info on site: there's quite a bit to do all around. A mix of quiet roads and bridleways linking the area's Lincolnshire villages means there's quite a bit to see if you want to get around by foot, pedal or horse. As well as being on the Ermine Way, The Beeches is also on the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Trail and is close to the RAF Cranwell Heritage Centre and the Newark Air Museum. The Newark Showground is nearby too for shows, displays and events. Plenty more history is at Lincoln – see the castle and cathedral if you only have time for two things – and at nearby National Trust properties like Grantham House and Tattershall Castle. Or take trips around Lincolnshire's old towns, like Sleaford, a market town since the twelfth century; Grantham, where Isaac Newton went to school, and Newark, besieged by the roundy-headed ones in the English Civil War.
