  • Off-grid campsite on the banks of the River Severn in Gloucestershire
  • Forest of Dean 10 minutes’ drive; Gloucester Cathedral 20 minutes
  • Pre-pitched bell tents with bedding, stove and crockery supplied
Backed by the River Severn and edging the Forest of Dean, Rivers View Holidays is a peaceful spot sheltered by mature trees and surrounded by fields, five minutes’ drive from Westbury-on-Severn in Gloucestershire. Off-grid accommodation is in pre-pitched bell tents sleeping up to four, so you can arrive on site and relax without having to put up a tent – handy for families with young kids who want to get on with the serious business of holidaying straight away. You won’t need to bring too much kit with you either, as each tent is provided with basic crockery – from plates to cutlery and saucepans – so you can cook on the small camping stove, and there’s a kettle plus complimentary tea and coffee to get your stay off on the right footing. Bedding is supplied, but please remember to bring your own towels. Outside, there are picnic benches, a barbecue and firepit for alfresco dining and enjoying the river views on warmer evenings – buy charcoal and kindling on site, and pick up other supplies in the supermarkets of Cinderford (15 minutes’ drive). There’s also a shared kitchen area for washing up, and showers are next to the parking area. The riverside pitches make great vantage points for watching the famed Severn Bore surge up the river, and you can access footpaths straight from the site for long country walks (take a picnic with you, there’s a basket in your tent). Need more action? Bring bikes to explore rural lanes or trails in the forest, go fishing or have a round of golf (both within 10 minutes’ drive).

Bell tent (no pets, four person)

Liked: We absolutely loved our stay. Beautiful and quiet area. Our tent was lovely and clean ; small touches like lantarens and fairy lights made it really cozy. Beds were extremely comfortable, I wish I had mattress like this at home ;) Kids had fun playing on site as there was plenty space for kids to roam around without disturbing anyone. Extra games that we could borrow were a bonus. Clean and modern toilets/showers/kitchen. Perfect place to enjoy Cotswold area.

Bell tent (four person)

Liked: Really good communication when booking, and Kelly was very accommodating to a date change request. Beautiful location, spotless facilities (loos, showers and kitchen area were all great), and everything you need is thought of and provided (ie picnic basket, extra blankets, games available to borrow). The bell tent was huge and the beds were really comfortable. Jay was an exceptional host - he gave us loads of useful info and delivered amazing pizzas on our first night. Would highly recommend this place for a peaceful stay by the river (also close to the Forest if Dean & Gloucester).

Disliked: Nothing

Bell tent (four person)

Liked: Stunning location right in the rivers edge with incredibly clean facilities. Nice hot showers, toilets and kitchen communal area. Water tap, picnic bench and bbq. Super comfy beds and a great host. Only 10 mins from the Forest of Dean. The most silent site I have ever stayed on!

Local attractions

Kids reluctant to go for a walk? Take them to the Forest of Dean (10 minutes’ drive), where hopefully they’ll be enchanted by the wacky, weird and colourful installations along the way-marked Sculpture Trail. They might also be tempted by the tangle of tracks at Puzzlewood (half an hour), with trees and boulders smothered by moss and lichen, and more importantly – to the kids, at least – where scenes from Harry Potter were filmed. There are more Harry Potter locations in the intricately vaulted cloisters at Gloucester Cathedral (20 minutes), a masterpiece of Gothic Perpendicular architecture. A snoop around the former warehouses at Gloucester Quays reveals waterfront restaurants and museums, as well as the start of gentle family walks along the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal. Still staying outside, have a stroll around the exquisite water garden at National Trust-owned Westbury Court Garden (five minutes), or see the remains of the bathhouse complex and ornate mosaic pavements at Great Witcombe Roman Villa (half an hour). Caught a rainy day? Take yourselves off to the Jet Age Museum (20 minutes, weekends only) to check out the vintage planes.
