Gramp's Field

This campground/park does not currently take bookings here on Pitchup.com.

General

  • Peaceful field in rural Gloucestershire close to the river Severn
  • Five minutes' drive from Westbury Court Garden; Gloucester 15 minutes
  • Simple site on a working farm with views over the Forest of Dean

Gramp's Field is a homely site that'd be a great fit for anyone looking for a peaceful break in the gorgeous Gloucestershire countryside. The gentle local landscape of hills, the Forest of Dean and the banks of the river Severn means there are plenty of nearby beauty spots to explore in a convenient location around a quarter of an hour's drive from the centre of Gloucester.

The site is about half a mile south from the centre of the village of Westbury-on-Severn, a pretty spot on the A48 with amenities including a café, a fish restaurant and a filling station. You'll also be setting up under a mile from the river Severn, where you can watch – or, if you're feeling sporty, surf on – the mighty Severn Bore around 120 times a year.

Gramp's Field is part of a working farm and so only has simple facilities like portaloo toilets. It's a very friendly spot, though, and the site team are keen to share their suggestions and tips about the local area in person when you arrive. Well-behaved dogs are welcome, and there's scope for setting up campfires and barbecues as long as the grass is properly protected.

Very basic yet. No frills camping experience. Not for everyone but just what I want my 11yr to experience something close to wild camping. Very warm family run business. Felt you were a part of it by time we left.

    Disliked:

No fault of the campsite. But many of the public foot paths in the surrounding area were not accessible and were clearly discouraging you to use them.

From the manager...

Thanks so much for the kind review - we love that our campers enjoy the space and feel part of the family! Look forward to meeting again.

Take care,

    - Really friendly welcome from the owner who couldn’t do enough to help
    - Quiet campsite with stunning sunsets
    - Very accessible location
    - Lots of space for the children to run around
    - Very clean toilets

    Disliked:

Nothing really - we had a great time and stayed for 16 days!! There was quite a lot of sheep poo on the field but that was to be expected and there was a noisy hippy festival that could be heard some nights but it didn’t affect our enjoyment or our sleep and was completely out of the owners control.

From the manager...

Hi Dan - thanks so much for the kind words, we absolutely loved having you all stay and seeing the kids have so much fun! What a great few weeks that was. Look forward to meeting again next year!

    great hosts very friendly

    Disliked:

toilets were very badly maintained - had to travel to a petrol station to use as the ones onsite weren't usable. However, this may have been a one off - other than this it was good

From the manager...

Hi Will, kind thanks for your feedback. I am so sorry to hear about your experience.

Unfortunately, Saturday afternoon (albeit a beautiful and fun day for most campers!) was an unfortunate combination of poor portaloo design, a high number of campers and the discovery that one of the portaloos was being tampered with so that it looked like it was in permenant use, which led to everyone using the same loo. This is something that we have not experienced before and were disappointed with and can assure you that the family regularly deep clean and replenish our portaloos.

We do have contact numbers on our visitors board which we welcome campers to use to notify us of anything. We will do our upmost to ensure that during the August Bank Holiday next year we will have more portaloos and will ensure further vigilant checks on these facilities.

Thank you kindly again.

Quiet location, very friendly staff, lots of field for the kids to enjoy, nice views, fire pit and wood available, small planes flying regularly, hot air balloons, stars easy to see. Local pub also very friendly with play area for kids.

    Disliked:

Dry weather has left the field bumpy and cracked. Portaloos were cleaned regularly but they were abit fragrant at times.

We’ve just come back from a lovely stay at Gramp’s Field.

Nice to be able to park and pitch up wherever you like with no restrictions, and the field was massive so it didn’t feel busy at all even though there were quite a few people there for the obank holiday weekend.

Steve’s a lovely man, very welcoming, and came round a couple of times to make sure we were okay which was much appreciated.

We will definitely be returning, thank you all at Gramp’s Field!

Very basic site with lots of space for the kids to run around, and lots of blackberries which the kids loved picking.
We were able to pitch where we wanted which we loved. There were quite a few people on site, but it didnt feel cramped as there was plently of space to spread out. We were able to have a fire, and the site had firepits that we could borrow.
    Toilets were cleaned daily.
Was able to have freezer blocks frozen.
Site owner came over to check we were OK, and was super friendly.
Wouldn't stay again purely because I think it may have been too basic for us, with children I think we need a bit more to the site with a purpose built toilet/shower area.

    Disliked:

There were only 2 portaloos which were quite smelly due to the number of people using them over the bank holiday weekend.
One was blocked at one point, but the owner cleaned them up.

From the manager...

Thanks for the kind words, it was so nice to meet you all. We are looking into additional portaloos next summer as this weekend was the first time we have been at capacity.

Sorry to see you won't be staying with us again but hope you had a lovely time.

Another lovely stay at gramps field, this time we came with other family members with children. The field had near 25 tents this time which is full capacity but still plenty of space for kids to run around and play games. Will definitely be back next year.

    Disliked:

Due to amount of people portaloos were abit smelly.
