  • Family-friendly site close to top Peak District attractions
  • A 20-minute drive from Buxton, Chatsworth House and Dovedale
  • Directly opposite the Tissington Trail; close to foodie pubs and shops
Off to Derbyshire for trips to Buxton, Bakewell and beyond? The Bull i' th' Thorn is located just off the A515, making it a doddle to zip from one end of the Peaks to the other and be back in time for tea. This peaceful park is set deep in the Peak District and comes with the sweeping views to prove it. Muddy boots are welcome at this outdoorsy spot – handy indeed given that the car-free Tissington Trail is opposite the site. After days packed with outdoor exploring, you’ll likely appreciate The Bull i' th' Thorn's hot showers (a separate shower room is available for families travelling with young kids). There are also three water points, an outdoor washing-up area for self-catering sorts and unisex toilets and showers. Although this is a self-check-in site, a member of staff cleans the facilities daily. The site's sister pub is a couple of minutes' drive away or a five- to 10-minute walk away via a public footpath. It's open every day; food is served from 12pm to 9pm, and breakfast is served from 8.30am to 11am on weekend mornings. The site is also a few minutes’ stroll from Tagg Lane Dairy, a family-run gelateria that uses raw milk straight from their pampered Jersey dairy herd.

Unpowered grass campervan or tent site

Liked The pitches were really spacious and we liked the toilet and wash facilities. The pitches are well kept and flat.

Disliked It is near a busy road which makes it easy to get to but you can hear road noise throughout the night. It's also a shame that the pub is closed as the nearest pub means you have to walk down the busy road for a time.

Would definitely recommend. Good location to all the trails and walks.

Liked Really enjoyed our stay here. Lovely and well maintained site with spacious pitches and great facilities. We stayed here at the end of October and it was a very quiet, peaceful few days. The main road is not far away, but at night we didn't notice any noise from traffic. There are multiple water points around the site, and the toilets and showers were hot and clean. The wifi is also very good, as is 4G phone signal (on 3 at least). A great location to visit the High Peak District, and only a few miles from Buxton. There is an Aldi about 4 miles away. A very enjoyable stay, really reasonable price, and we would definitely visit again.

Would stay again. Can’t complain for the ease of everything.

Non-electric bell tent

Liked Liked the ease of having a pub right next to where we were staying.
Showers were nice and warm.
The fire pit and picnic bench was good.

Disliked The bell tent we stayed in could have done with a clean on the outside.
There wasn’t a designated tap for drinking water.

Lovely campsite with friendly staff. Clean facilities. Huge pitch.

Liked Electric pitches and washing facilities where excellent.
Reasonably priced.

Disliked Showers were poorly installed so you had to leane over the tap to get under the water as the Showers where low powered wich normally isent a problem but due to being tall and the odd way the taps where installed made it awkward to shower.
Also the shower block didn't have any curtains inside the stalls to prevent cloths/towls from getting wet from the showe or flour guard not block to prevent the same for shoes not a problem in single sex showers block only an issue in these unisex ones.

Local attractions

This countrified site is close to beauty spots like Dovedale (20 minutes' drive), where you can stroll along the water's edge and picnic by the far-farmed stepping stones. For a more adventurous (and hillier) trek on foot, pick up the nearby Limestone Way in Monyash (five minutes). Looking for cycle hire? Head to Parsley Hay (five minutes) to hire bikes (including accessible models) and tandems. This is where the High Peak and Tissington trails meet (both run along flat former railway lines, so there's little chance you'll run out of puff). Chatsworth House (20 minutes) has grand gardens and elegant interiors to admire (there's also a guinea pig village that's likely to revive any tiddlers suffering from museum fatigue). Buxton (15 minutes) is a spa town of similarly posh repute and is full of boutique shops, ornate terraces and cultural sites (it also plays host to the Buxton Festival throughout the month of July). It's also home to two popular golf courses (the Cavendish Golf Club for hot shots and Peak Practice Golf for newbies).
