General

  • Quiet and comfy glamping on a Peak District farm
  • A 10-minute drive to Peak District National Park
  • Fishing lakes and local pubs a 15-minute walk away

Head to High Ashes Haven for a sniff of history: this site is part of a farm dating back to 1640. The staff might have had rather more spartan berths back then, but in the comfy digs here you'll feel just as close to nature (the farm's pet sheep may wander by, but you won't have to do any tending these days, just wave hi as they amble past).

The units here are warm and brightly decorated spaces with a cosy bed, with linen, towels and a goose feather and down duvet all provided. Right next door is a bathroom with hot shower, toilet and sink. For eats, cook up a feast in the well-equipped kitchen area or sling a pizza into the woodfired oven. Logs are supplied for the firepit too so you can toast yourselves as you dine alfresco: peak relaxation.

It's thirsty work of course, all that gazing at the scenery… Handily, the hostelries of Ashover dish up local ales (and home-cooked dinners should you tire of prepping meals), a 15-minute walk or a five-minute drive away.

And if that local scenery looks a tad familiar to film buffs? That may well be because the area's used as the location for 2019 hit movie Mary Queen of Scots.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

We all loved our stay, it really is a little slice of heaven. Our children (9years and 12years) spent hours with the animals, collecting vegetables from the community garden and running through the fields . Evenings were filled with toasting marshmallows over the fire pit and then getting snuggly under the duvets and soft throws provided in the tent. Our host, Phil and his wife have thought of everything you could possibly need and we had our own outside ‘kitchen’ with bbq, fridge, microwave, sink and kettle. They are perfect hosts and so patient with the children's questions and very generous with eggs discovered in the chicken coup at breakfast time. The glamping bathroom is rustic but super clean and quirky so it served our needs perfectly. Our tent was positioned looking out to fields and we couldn’t hear or see the other guests which is unusual for a camp site and just perfect for a proper escape from the world.
Phil told us some great walk options and also places to eat if we didn’t fancy cooking, all close by. We look forward to returning

Super host extremely friendly cooperative and compassionate about the care and the work he does to look after his guests, I have never met a host like him . We bothered him quite a few times and he was happy to help each time.
We reached late in evening , we forgot milk and eggs and asked him about local shops but he kindly provided us with milk and eggs for the breakfast for the kids , that was a very kind gesture and it win our hearts
.My kids ; both teens, loved his compnay too , they had long chats with him , Phil engaged with the kids, as he showed them around the farm, kids fed the animals , they didnt even use their phones.
Location was exceptional in terms of views comfort and privacy.
substantial area dedicated to us only, We didnt have to interact with other people staying as they were not in close vicinty, We loved this bit too.
Tent was nice and warm and very comfortable and clean. Enough towels and duvets provided just in case.

We really liked the tent and the fire pit. The beds were comfy and there was a kettle and fridge which was useful. The area was secluded. The owner was attentive.

    Disliked:

The boys toilets were not very pleasant and there was only one other toilet which doubled as the women's and everyone else's too. This was especially difficult when the children wanted to go now as young kids often do.

From the manager...

Thank you, for your review and that your were very happy with your accommodation.
We are a micro site with a maximum of ,Three families staying at one time.
We have One dedicated, V.I.P. toilet /shower room for our glamping guests to use.
Next door to the glamping toilet, we have a basic functional toilet with wash basins .
This is cleaned regularly, but we freely acknowledge, it is getting ready for a refresh . This is being undertaken in the near future.
We recognize that you found it a challenge to share the glamping toilet, with the, One other couple who , were staying here at the same time as you.
We are not able to provided individual, en suite, flushing facilities at this time.

Regards,

Phil

Local attractions

You can join up with the 34-mile Chesterfield Round Walk right from the site for a circular tour of southern Peaks countryside (it's split into sections with parking and bus links if you want to take it easy). A 10-minute drive takes you to the Peak District National Park, crisscrossed with walking and cycling trails for all levels of fitness or heroism. Even if you only make it down to Ashover for a pie and a pint, you'll see some classic countryside, so bring your camera along wherever you roam.

Fishing enthusiasts can follow the stream out of the farm for a mile to Press Manor Lakes, where there's coarse and fly fishing for trout and carp as well as fishing lessons for those who want to hone their angling technique.

Family days out nearby include Gulliver's Kingdom (15 minutes' drive), a dinosaur-studded theme park with log flumes and courage-testing rollercoasters. It's also worth taking the cable car from Matlock up to the Heights of Abraham, a hilltop park where you can venture into massive underground caverns or climb and swing in adventure playgrounds.

Within a half-hour drive, you can see how the other half lives (or lived) at the historic estates of Chatsworth, Haddon Hall and Bolsover Castle. If you fancy galloping across the hills like country squires meanwhile, there's horse riding and pony trekking at Matlock Farm Park (10 minutes from the site).

Must see

  • Chatsworth (9.6 kilometres)
  • Arkwright's Cromford Mills (10.1 kilometres)
