A sunny haven

General

  • Quiet and comfy glamping on a Peak District farm
  • A 10-minute drive to Peak District National Park
  • Fishing lakes and local pubs a 15-minute walk away

Head to High Ashes Haven for a sniff of history: this site is part of a farm dating back to 1640. The staff might have had rather more spartan berths back then, but in the comfy digs here you'll feel just as close to nature (the farm's pet sheep may wander by, but you won't have to do any tending these days, just wave hi as they amble past).

The units here are warm and brightly decorated spaces with a cosy bed, with linen, towels and a goose feather and down duvet all provided. Right next door is a bathroom with hot shower, toilet and sink. For eats, cook up a feast in the well-equipped kitchen area or sling a pizza into the woodfired oven. Logs are supplied for the firepit too so you can toast yourselves as you dine alfresco: peak relaxation.

It's thirsty work of course, all that gazing at the scenery… Handily, the hostelries of Ashover dish up local ales (and home-cooked dinners should you tire of prepping meals), a 15-minute walk or a five-minute drive away.

And if that local scenery looks a tad familiar to film buffs? That may well be because the area's used as the location for 2019 hit movie Mary Queen of Scots.

The quiet, open and private space. Friendly and helpful hosts. There’s everything you need and more, including a thoughtful welcome basket. Unfortunately due to the wind and our pre-determined plans, we didn’t make use of the pizza oven or the fire pit but the area provided for this is perfect and very private. The hosts had also thoughtfully put up a separate play tent for the children to use in case it rained.

    Disliked:

Nothing! everything was provided, and more than suggested on the details when booking in terms of children’s beds and bedding. A welcome surprise. It was quite cold and windy so it was chilly at night but as long as you pack accordingly it’s warm and snuggly once you’re tucked up in bed. An electric heater is also provided should you need a little help to keep warm (we didn’t need it).

My girlfriend and I had an excellent two night stay in the Shepherd’s hut at High Ashes Haven. Bad weather on the first night did nothing to dampen our spirits as the cabin provided cosy refuge from the rain and better weather on the second day meant we were fully able to enjoy the beautiful plot and surrounding countryside.
The hut itself was warm and homely with electrical plug sockets and electric heater which provided luxuries alien to us as regular campers and we had access to a great outdoor kitchen area and shower and toilet facilities.
Phil and Ness were wonderful hosts who were friendly and accommodating whilst also leaving you plenty of privacy.
All of our needs were taken care of and we especially appreciated the complementary provisions which saved repeated trips to the shops for ‘essentials’.
Overall we had a great two nights and would definitely consider returning in the future.

We absolutely loved our stay here with our four-year old! Everything is so well thought out and it is such a quiet, scenic place to stay with such character. We loved how the animals roam around too. The owners totally went out of their way for us during some awful weather-they know why! Also COVID safe if anyone is concerned about that. We would 100% recommend staying here to anyone. It was truly brilliant!

The tranquil vibe, we arrived in the rain and immediately felt at peace and we were still in the car. Once we got to the hut we were delighted. It had so many homely touches including a happer of goodies (prosecco, giant marshmellows biscuits and chocolate, smores anyone??). The bed was so comfortable and full of pillows and throws, so luxurious. There is plenty of storage for all your bags if your like us and overpacked. The rain continued all night and sounded amazing on the roof and windows and we felt so snug and warm with the cute heater in the hut. And we loved the barn door that spilt so you can just have the top door open and look outside while in bed. There are ducks, sheep and hens roaming free and this added to the relaxed feel. The shower and toiletrees supplied was so refreshing and we loved the rustic toilet/bathroom. The owners have thought of every little touch. The location is perfect for the peaks or matlock and if like us you can just stay on the site and toast marshmellows by the fire. You get 100 percent privacy but the host is always on hand to help you or guide you and is such a genuine guy with alot of goodness and passion for his trade. We will definately be going back first chance we get away from work as its the sort of place you can unwind and feel at peace as soon as you step foot on the gravel. We stayed for 4 days but i wish it was longer.

We have just come back from High Ashes today (Wednesday 19th Aug 2020)
Had an incredible time, the children didn’t want to leave. Upon arrival there was a hamper of goodies waiting for us which was a nice thoughtful touch.
You are in the middle of no where with amazing views , such a rustic lovely farm!
We stayed in the bell tent, you have the place all to yourself bar sharing with the animals like the ducks and the chickens. We had a resident chicken which the kids loved.
There was a couple of rain showers but it didn’t matter as Phil & Ness have made an area with a water proof covering, that has your bbq & seating area in. We just sat in there on some bean bags watching the world go by.
Phil took time out of his day to show the children the lambs & the pigs & to tell us abit about the farm which was just lovely of him.
The kids are already asking when can we go back. We will definitely be booking again.

We loved everything at High Ashes Haven. The hut was very cosy and comfortable, the cooking facilities were great (we even made pizza from scratch with the pizza wood oven) and the atmosphere and surroundings were fantastic. Phil was very welcoming and hospitable, everyone at the farm made us feel like home. Our toddler had the best time watching the animals in close quarters, and we went for a few hiking routes that are directly connected to the farm.

It was a memorable week and we hope to be back soon.

The tent and kitchen was very well equipped and lots of little extras that I didn’t expect, fantastic welcome basket which was a lovely treat. We all loved making pizzas in our own Pizza oven followed by popcorn and toasted marshmallows on the camp fire. Children didn’t want to go home. Can’t wait to visit again 😁

Beds made up upon arrival we stayed in the shepherds hut which was so quirky. We had our own bbw fire pit and pizza over. A swing ball set op right outside. Our own fridge in the kitchen area. If you love animals and peace and quiet this is the place for you. Clean shower/toilet

Local attractions

You can join up with the 34-mile Chesterfield Round Walk right from the site for a circular tour of southern Peaks countryside (it's split into sections with parking and bus links if you want to take it easy). A 10-minute drive takes you to the Peak District National Park, crisscrossed with walking and cycling trails for all levels of fitness or heroism. Even if you only make it down to Ashover for a pie and a pint, you'll see some classic countryside, so bring your camera along wherever you roam.

Fishing enthusiasts can follow the stream out of the farm for a mile to Press Manor Lakes, where there's coarse and fly fishing for trout and carp as well as fishing lessons for those who want to hone their angling technique.

Family days out nearby include Gulliver's Kingdom (15 minutes' drive), a dinosaur-studded theme park with log flumes and courage-testing rollercoasters. It's also worth taking the cable car from Matlock up to the Heights of Abraham, a hilltop park where you can venture into massive underground caverns or climb and swing in adventure playgrounds.

Within a half-hour drive, you can see how the other half lives (or lived) at the historic estates of Chatsworth, Haddon Hall and Bolsover Castle. If you fancy galloping across the hills like country squires meanwhile, there's horse riding and pony trekking at Matlock Farm Park (10 minutes from the site).
