Acquaint yourself with the local area by strolling into Hédervár to see its Renaissance castle (five minutes’ walk) or get straight out to some major sightseeing points in this part of the world, like the thermal baths in Mosonmagyaróvár (20 minutes’ drive) or the Baroque-era Old Town in Győr (25 minutes). A couple more places can be ticked off the bucket list, like the elegant Austrian capital Vienna (an hour and a half) and historic Slovakian capital Bratislava (45 minutes). Closer to base, and a good shout for those days where the kids need some simple entertainment, is the riverside petting zoo Dodó Vadfarm és Szabadidőpark (10 minutes) – bring some carrots for the donkeys if you remember. While you’re at the shops gathering carrots, picnic ingredients will come in handy. You could set up by the lake at Morotva-tó (15 minutes), making sure to keep one eye on the colourful birdlife. There's also the Dunajské Luhy Protected Landscape Area (half an hour); kayaking and bike rides are super popular there, around its lush wetlands, oxbow lakes and forests.
