For stays among the Douglas pines and chestnut trees dotted about the hilly slopes of the Monts d’Ardèche Regional Nature Park, make tracks for Les Cabanes de Labrousse, a family-friendly site 10 minutes’ drive from the Rhône-Alpes village of Saint-Julien-Labrousse. Here, you’re not just by the trees… you’re up in their branches. Pack cleverly for stays, as clambering up to the eco-friendly cabins isn’t always a simple matter of taking the stairs – some involve harnesses, carabiners, helmets and rope ladders, so be sure all kit is easy to carry. Guests must bring their own bedding and towels too (though sleeping bags can be hired on site), so be sure to leave room for those. The peaceful site is well-placed for explores of the surrounding areas, with a marked hiking and mountain biking route leading from the foot of the trees through the mountains of the Monts d’Ardèche. The site has also earned an 'Accueil Vélo' label for its bike-friendly setup and services, and has electric 'trottinette' scooters available for hire. For another way to explore, head along to Chalencon to hire donkeys for more leisurely trekking. Keeping energy up during stays is essential to get everything on lists done. Eats are easily sorted on site, as breakfasts are delivered every morning to the foot of the trees the cabins are perched in for guests to hoist up, and dinners can also be arranged upon request.

Μου άρεσε We had a wonderful stay in the treehouse. It was beautifully clean, very well cared for, and the service was incredibly friendly and welcoming.

The kids absolutely loved the stargazing experience. The special platform in the clearing was the perfect spot to lie back and look at the stars, away from the lights and noise. It was a really memorable experience for the whole family.

The location is fantastic — a wonderfully quiet, peaceful and genuinely gorgeous part of the Ardèche, surrounded by nature. A really special place to switch off and enjoy some quality time together.

We would definitely recommend it and would love to come back!

Μου άρεσε On a passé un super weekend à observer les écureuils et ramasser les châtaignes bien à l’abris des Douglas! Nous avons été très bien accueilli et redirigé vers une cabane plus adaptée à nos besoins. Les enfants ont déjà repéré dans quelles cabanes elles voudraient dormir la prochaine fois!🤞🏼

Guests whose interest in the arboreal has only been piqued by treehouse stays won’t have to travel far for more – it’s less than 40 minutes’ drive to Aquarock Aventure, where treetop courses are in place for all levels. It’s easy to stay active closer to home base too: it’s just 10 minutes’ drive to join the long-distance via ferrata route La Dolce Via – which stretches for 90 kilometres through the Ardèche – and about half an hour to Devesset Lake for swimming, watersports, sailing, tennis, miniature golf and orienteering. Wandering about the area’s prettiest villages comes highly recommended by the site team, who suggest starting with the traditional brick buildings and narrow streets of Chalencon (20 minutes) before moving on to Désaignes (25 minutes) and Boucieu-le-Roi (35 minutes). Even more scenic explores are to be had with rides along the Vélorail des Gorges du Doux (45 minutes), canoeing and kayaking on the Eyrieux (40 minutes), or taking a ride on the scenic Train de l’Ardèche (45 minutes). Other interesting days out might take you to the gardens, maze and Cité du Chocolat Valrhôna in Tournon-sur-Rhône (50 minutes), or to see jewellery being made in Vallée du Bijou (20 minutes).
