There’s a very unexpected bonus here, for the campsite is set on a private estate surrounding a former monastery dating right back to 705 AD… and it is this monastery that forms the photogenic backdrop to your stay.
Accommodation at this lovely spot is in safari tents heated by woodburning stove – the canvas sides can be rolled back to keep everyone cool on summer days. These spacious canvas hideaways have bags of room for up to five people to sleep in an assortment of double, bunk and cupboard beds with all bedding provided. Each has an ensuite shower, and thoughtful touches in well-equipped kitchenettes like a welcome package with tea, coffee and so on.
Let the kids (and any accompanying dogs) play freely – and safely – in the forest. Your offspring can burn off energy on the trampoline or playing field, and make themselves useful by collecting eggs for breakfast from the free-range hens. They might also enjoy helping to feed and groom the handsome Frisian horses that graze in neighbouring paddocks, or saddle them up for supervised trots around the estate.
And as for you, well… relaxation is what it’s all about here. Put your feet up on the decking to admire the countryside, rustle up a barbecue (source goodies for the grill from Saint-Mihiel, five minutes’ drive), or join your hostess Janneke for a handmade pizza on certain evenings. On clear nights, take time out on the decking to see the Milky Way perform its dance across the skies.

No need to leave Feather Down - Domaine Saint-Christophe for walks, as the 220-acre estate is surrounded by unspoilt forest criss-crossed with hiking trails. Other options for getting out and active include kayaking along the River Meuse at Saint-Mihiel (five minute’ drive), and on hot sunny days, pack a picnic and head for Lac de Madine (25 minutes) for sailing, windsurf or sunbathing before taking a dip in the refreshing water.
And of course the area is steeped in World War I history. Clamber up to the landmark Butte de Montsec (15 minutes), a neoclassical monument honouring the American soldiers who fought in northern France, and visit the remains of German trenches at the Tranchée de la Soif (10 minutes). See maps, weapons and uniforms displayed in the Musée du Saillant de Saint-Mihiel à Marbotte (15 minutes), and admire the vivid stained-glass windows commemorating those who died.
For a change of pace, Metz (an hour) beckons with its historic old quarter, vast Gothic Cathédrale Saint-Etienne and fortified, medieval Porte des Allemands, while art lovers can indulge themselves with modern-art masterpieces at the futuristic Centre Pompidou-Metz.
