If you fancy stretching your legs, you can start with a trail leading up to a viewpoint from just outside the site, or head a little further afield to walk among the giant trees at Monumento Natural de las Secuoyas del Monte Cabezón (10 minutes’ drive). There are some lovely walks along the coast too, particularly in the Oyambre Natural Park (15 minutes). The coast isn’t all about hiking though – you could also settle down for some seaside time on Luaña beach (10 minutes), or head over to Comillas (10 minutes) which has a long sandy beach and a sea-view golf course as well as some stunning architecture – notably some Art Nouveau houses and the famed El Capricho, designed by Antoni Gaudí. Heading east instead, the gorgeous town of Santillana del Mar (20 minutes) makes a great place to stroll around, looking out for the 15th-century Don Borja’s Tower and residences like the Velarde palace as you head to the Plaza Mayor and the Romanesque Colegiata de Santa Juliana cathedral. Not far from the town (20 minutes from the site) are the Altamira Caves, with a museum where you can learn all about the prehistoric rock art found here.
