If you’ve got a canoe or small boat, you’re welcome to bring it along here for days of paddling or sailing around the local waterways – if not, rent a boat on site and give it a try. The shallow waters of the Ketelmeer (10 minutes’ drive) are a real haven for bird life too, so bring your binoculars to see what you can spy. For more chances to spot wildlife, head over to the hiking and bike trails of Weerribben-Wieden National Park (45 minutes). In spring, the tulip fields around Dronten (10 minutes) and Emmeloord (20 minutes) are the places to go for colourful views of the country’s most famous flowers. There are some splendid floral displays at De Orchideeën Hoeve (half an hour) too, along with adventure paths and jungle trails for the kids to follow. Elsewhere nearby, you might like to entertain children with days out at Walibi Holland theme park (15 minutes) or meeting the residents of the Dolfinarium (half an hour). An appealing outing for all the family takes you to Zwolle (20 minutes) to explore the city walls and a stroll in the historic city centre.
