When settling in Struga for a stint, there’s oodles to do: start with a 20-minute stroll to the Monastery of Kalishta – lovely lakeside views the whole way, natch – which started as a cave church in the 14th or 15th century and was later developed into the Orthodox religious complex is it today. Next, take the 10-minute drive to Struga town for the taxidermy and archaeological artefacts at Dr Nikola Nezlobinski Museum, the Ottoman-era Halveti Teke monastery and the stalls at the Old Bazaar. Souvenir shopping sorted, circle around the lake to the east and land in Ohrid town, 25 minutes away, for the First Bulgarian Empire’s Samoil’s Fortress and the remains of a Greek amphitheatre from even further back in time. Perhaps the most famed spot here – or at least the most photographed – is the Church of St John at Kaneo, a 30-minute drive, whose ancient pinkish-red bricks sit on a cliff contrasting with the lake in the background.
