If lakeside living is something you can get behind, take the plunge with a stay at Campeggio della Colombaia. There's a whole reel of outdoor activities in the area around this site, so families and couples alike can spend days out in the open air playing volleyball, football, or swimming at the private beach. Located in Padenghe sul Garda on the southern edge of Lake Garda, this family-friendly site is a short stroll from the town's supermarkets, restaurants, and the local castle. On top of that, this lakeside park has its own private beach, for easy access to undisturbed days of splashing and sunbathing. This site has been set up in a gently sloping area with ample shade from olive trees and other forms of greenery to keep you cool as you admire the views stretching out all the way over the shores of the Sirmione Peninsula. While a fair share of your time will likely be spent dipping in Lake Garda, you can also spend time at the outdoor infinity pool or channel competitive streaks at the football pitch and sandy beach volleyball area. Thankfully, younger kids should be kept gainfully busy too, in between the indoor play area and shallow paddling pool. As for Italian-style dining, guests can tuck into a dish of sunset pizza or pasta every evening, while gazing out over the boats on Lake Garda. Fear not, the site has also plenty of facilities to spruce yourselves up after the activities of the day, including a coin-operated laundry room, toilets and hot showers (plus wifi to share your snaps).

Imagine yourself as royalty at several castles within easy reach of the site. There's the hilltop Padenghe sul Garda castle (just five minutes' drive), or you can get truly lost in the network of moats and turrets at Sirmione Castle, one of Italy’s best-preserved fortresses (30 minutes). Thrillseekers can take a tumble on the water rides at Parco Cavour (35 minutes) or head out on a day trip to Gardaland (10 minutes) which adds an unexpected dose of adrenalin in an otherwise mellow part of the Italian countryside. Those with a good aim may want to dedicate an afternoon to golfing at Gardagolf Country Club (10 minutes). There's also the chance to trace the footsteps of celebrities by visiting the late home of the Italian opera singer Maria Callas, 30 minutes away at the Villa di Maria Callas. For a taste of Italian city living, Milan is an hour and 20 minutes by car, or bond over gnocchi and Roman architecture 45 minutes away in one of Italy’s most romantic cities, Verona. Alternatively, the home of Italian caviar, Brescia, is a 35-minute drive away.
