Camping des Landes

There are numerous local hiking and biking routes, and you can go fishing for carp at Brittany Forest Lakes or – and this is handy for rainy days – swim in the indoor pool at Piscine Aquapaq at Scaër (15 minutes’ drive). You can also have a go at kayaking along the Ellé River – perhaps down to the spectacular Roches du Diable (20 minutes), a series of vast boulders lying on the river bed that make stunning picnic spots. Brittany is liberally scattered with prehistoric relics; the Menhir de Saint-Jean (15 minutes) is one of the tallest in the region, and there’s a megalithic burial chamber and standing stone at Kercordonner (half an hour). Travel a little further afield and you can witness more than 3,000 menhirs standing in ranks at the Alignements du Carnac (just over an hour). Once you’re at Carnac, you might decide to spend time on an Atlantic beach. Sandy Plage de Saint-Colomban is a popular choice for sunbathing, dinghy sailing and paddleboarding, and there’s a kids’ club on Plage de Légenèse (both an hour and a quarter) during the summer months.
