Wannabe Bear Grylls with an appetite for adventure ought to book a stay at The Eyrie, a wild camping site with spectacular coastal views on the Isle of Lewis, in the Outer Hebrides. An eyrie is a bird of prey’s nest, usually built high on a cliff. And there are certainly similarities between an eagle’s eyrie and this secluded, elevated spot that is reached via a steep path up a hill overlooking a remote working croft. The pitch sits within the ruins of an old blackhouse, and those ancient stone walls shelter you from the wind and heighten (not that heightening is necessary, since you’ll be the only guests here) the feeling of absolute privacy. In addition to the pitch, you’ll have access to a walled (open-air) ‘lounge’ area with a hammock and a shelf for your cooking stove. Speaking of cooking, you can help yourself to the vegetables and salad greens grown in the polytunnel near the croft, and to the eggs laid by the free-range hens on site. (Because of these happy chickens and the resident flock of Soay sheep, dogs should be kept on the lead at all times while on the croft.) As you explore the surrounding landscape of rugged hills, glens and shoreline, you might also spot less domesticated animals, including stags, eagles and otters. There’s a community shop in Ravenspoint (15 minutes’ drive); if your recipes require particularly exotic ingredients, you can try the supermarkets in Stornoway (50 minutes). By the way, if you need help getting to the site, the helpful owners can arrange a pick-up from the ferry terminal or airport. A walled area with a sink, composting toilet and solar shower completes the picture at this wild camping site.
