For your next adventure in a designated National Landscape, how about choosing the North Pennines? Or more specifically, the smart wooden pods at Hilltop Huts, tucked behind a popular pub in Teesdale, and 10 minutes’ drive from Barnard Castle in County Durham? Sleeping up to five people, all the pods are equipped with a kettle, toaster, microwave, small fridge and storage. Outside, there’s a picnic bench for open-air eats on warmer days, as well as a covered pot-wash area, coin-operated washing and drying facilities, and a modern shower block, with hot water heated by green energy. There’s no need to fret if you’ve left anything vital behind at home, as there’s a well-stocked shop on site, where you can pick up disposable barbecues, charcoal and kindling if you fancy honing your alfresco cooking skills. And don’t forget that the Moorcock Inn, where you can be sure of a warm welcome as well as home-cooked food using produce from the owners’ farm, is (literally) steps away from your cosy pod. There’s masses to keep kids happy too. A games room in the pub has a pool table, darts board and dominos (handy for any drizzly days), while Eggleston Play Park (10 minutes’ walk) is all set up with zipwires, slides, swings, mini football and a basketball court. Or how about a family excursion to follow the Gruffalo Trail in Hamsterley Forest (20 minutes’ drive)?

Syntes om Lovely clean pod well set out in a very nice area with beautiful views
Friendly staff and nice food at the local (attached)pub, clean toilet/shower facilities

Syntes ikke om They was nobody else there! It was the very end of season so to be expected really + lots of friendly locals in the pub.
Can't rely on bus service as it seems very little and random.

Syntes om The pods were spotlessly clean and well equipped.
The Moorcock Inn was amazing for food and just on the doorstep of the pods - we ate there twice. Wonderful part of the country to explore.

Syntes ikke om We went over the bank holiday weekend and even though there was a sign on the outside of the toilet block stating the cleaning times as 10-10.30am, 2-2.30pm and 6-6.30pm we didn’t think they had been cleaned at all on either the Sat or the Sun. Luckily the blocks weren’t busy and most pods were vacated on the Sun morning so not many people were using them on Sun/Mon am.
Also, the write up includes that there is an onsite shop. I saw a door that said shop but you could see through the windows that it was far from that - this information needs removing from the listing as people could rely on there being a shop for essentials and because the pods are quite remote it could cause an issue for them.

Syntes om The whole experience was five star in every way. The pod was excellent and really clean. The location is great. I was very lucky it was really quiet as only a few pods were being used, which I appreciated.

The arrival was really good and they communicated really well. The departure was so laid back and easy.

The area is really quiet even though it is behind a pub. I would never have known. Next time I'll pop in for a beer.

Would really recommend for anyone that is looking for a more laid back quiet camping pod experiences. The showers were great and the toilet block is so clean.

Syntes om Beautiful site in a fab location,facilities lovely and clean pub on site was delicious.

Syntes ikke om Only problem i had was it said there was a shop onsite but their wasn't. And I paid extra for a hut sleeping 5 people but we only was given the 4 there was no one on the site to ask and we werent entirely sure if the pub would deal with it the site was empty so no reason why we didnt get the correct pod but we made do I was just unhappy that I paid extra.

Syntes om It was nice and peaceful and the toilet/shower block was nice. Thankfully it was very empty during our stay which meant we were close to the car park and toilets.

Syntes ikke om The hut was dirty, the pull out beds were very uncomfortable with such little padding to sleep on. There was an outdoor sink for drinking water which wasn’t the best either. The reception/shop on site was always shut and when we came to check out there was no one anywhere on site, not in the reception or the pub so I had to leave the key next to the reception door, which I don’t thinks very professional at all. We also weren’t given any WiFi passwords.

Syntes om Great location. Pods are a good size and were very clean. Toilet and shower block were immaculate. Great base to set out on some lovely walks. The local pub is great and the food was very good.
