Log Cabin Wilderness Lodge

The big draw around here, clearly, is the million or so acres of wild countryside that surrounds the lodge. The park doesn’t organise activities but the folks here are happy to give advice on hiking trails for all levels, and to share their secret fave spots to fish for northern pike and Arctic grayling. Bring your binoculars along, for there’s a lot of wildlife spotting and birdwatching to be done here (moose frequently wander past, and eagles, trumpeter swans and goshawks are among the local residents). And if you’re swinging by in winter, perhaps think about chucking skis or snowshoes in the car too – there are cross country trails for both through the local area. If you’re venturing back towards civilisation, the trip to Tok will take you half an hour or so. While you’re here, look out for sled dog demos (this is, after all, the self-styled sled dog capital of Alaska), take a boat trip on the Tanana River and try your luck panning for gold in local streams and creeks. It’s also worth dropping in on the eclectic collections, traditional games and miniature golf at MuklukLand, 40 minutes away.
