If you can bear to be parted from Rambling Rose, start your explorations in Lostwithiel (20 minutes’ walk), which has a deli, pubs and restaurants. Browse the antique shops, stroll alongside the River Fowey or explore the ruins of circular Restormel Castle (40 minutes), one of several Norman castles built in Cornwall. You can watch outdoor concerts there during summer months too. A bit further afield, there are also evening concerts and events at the Eden Project (15 minutes’ drive), where you can explore biomes full of rare tropical and temperate plants and trees during the day. Another popular Cornish day out is at the Lost Gardens of Heligan (half an hour), with lush plantings and sculpture trails through the trees. Closer to home, there are hillside flower gardens and woodland strolls at Hidden Valley Gardens (10 minutes). Want to do something a bit different? Get up close to zebras and meerkats at Porfell Wildlife Park and Sanctuary (15 minutes), also home of a reconstructed Maasai village, sign yourself up for a bat-patrol evening at National Trust-owned Lanhydrock (five minutes), or go foraging for wild food from the Wild Food School (five minutes).
