Diana and Oliver had their eye on this site for several years before they were able to snap it up and build their home here. So it’s no wonder they’re now rightly proud of the place, and particularly the gorgeous gardens, with their Koi pond, lush green lawns and shaded spots under the weeping willows.
Tuff Top Estates is a spacious and peaceful site on the banks of the Renosterspruit river, just outside Bloemfontein. The city’s attractions and amenities are a 20-minute drive away and the airport is just 10 minutes away, making it a mighty handy option for those seeking a place for pre- or post-flight snoozing.
There’s heaps of space here to relax and let off steam – the owners are proud of their gardens but not overly precious about them, so games of soccer, rugby and cricket are welcome, as are kids riding bikes. Guests can fish in the river, take a dip in the swimming pool or chill out in the shade of the wooden lapa.
It wouldn’t be a south African sojourn without a braai at some point, so guests are welcome to light up a barbecue here, with all the necessaries available from a supermarket five minutes’ drive away. If you’d rather have someone else do the cooking honours, there are a couple of restaurants a few minutes’ drive away.

Llocs d'interès
Bloemfontein (also known as the city of roses, for its flower-filled streets and parks) is a pretty laidback place for a capital city. Drive down to the centre in 20 minutes or so to wander through the Free State National Botanical Garden, take in a show at Naval Hill Planetarium and visit the museums (the Oliewenhuis Art Museum and Anglo-Boer War Museum come highly recommended).
To see some of South Africa’s famed wildlife, take a 15-minute drive to Bagamoya Wildlife Estate to meet the lions, or head to Bloemfontein Zoo, home to large collection of primates and native birds.
If you’ve got overheated kids in tow, there are a couple of waterparks nearby – zoom down the slides at Gwen Bali Waterworld, 25 minutes’ drive away, or take the 10-minute drive to Maselspoort Holiday Resort for outdoor pools, slides and landside activities including trampolines and miniature golf.
