When stress is starting to build and opportunities to chill out are desperately needed, you won’t go wrong with a stay at Cool Under Canvas, a family-friendly glampsite five minutes’ drive from the Auvergne-region town of Pontaumur in the Puy de Dôme department.
Unwinding starts immediately on arrival as guests take in the spectacular views towards the peak of Puy de Dôme in one direction and across fields towards distant hills in the other, then bask in the small outdoor pool and (for younger guests in particular) meet the farm’s goats, pigs and chickens in animal corner.
The site’s well-placed for scenic rambling explores of this pretty rural area too. A network of public footpaths passes right by the site, the village of Miremont is a 25-minute stroll away through woodland, and about an hour of walking should lead to the river – and riverbank paths – at Sioulet, where keeping eyes peeled for otters is an absolute must.
If that all sounds too sedate, pick up the pace by clambering into the saddle for local spins (making trips to Miremont and Sioulet 10 minutes and 20 minutes respectively), or strapping bikes to cars and taking a 15-minute drive to Combrailles from where a handful of lengthy biking circuits begin.
For energy-filled adventures, be sure to stock up and fill up before departure at the small honesty shop on site, or at the supermarket or weekly market in Pontaumur.

This close to the spectacular Puy de Dôme – a UNESCO Heritage Site, no less – not visiting it would nearly be a crime. The dormant volcano is about 40 minutes’ drive away and home to stunning views of the rest of the volcanic Chaîne des Puys. Not up to scaling the mountain? Catch a train to the summit instead, then follow the trails around the crater (if able), find the remains of the Roman Temple of Mercury, and have a bite in the restaurant.
On the way back to site, make a pitstop at Vulcania amusement park. The ‘European Park of Volcanism’ should entertain kids and grownups handily, while teaching lots about seismology and giving the whole family a solid grounding in what’s going on beneath the surface of Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Nature Park (25 minutes from home base).
Cool off after all that volcanic activity with a trip to the 10-kilometre-long, 385-hectare Lac Fades, 15 minutes from the site, and fishing, sailing, canoeing and swimming, then paddle along to either of the lake's inflatable waterparks to bounce about on the water.
Fancy a city day instead? The Old Town, museums, casino, gothic cathedral (built from local lava rock) and karting circuit of Clermont-Ferrand are about 55 minutes away.
