Forest + farm = a good start on the location front for Powys glamping site Old Forest Farm Getaway. Add in stunning views of the Black Mountains and Wye Valley, lots of space from which to gaze at them and a handy location five minutes’ drive from Hay-on-Wye and it all starts to add up to a most excellent getaway. And that’s not all… ’Peaceful’ and ‘friendly’ are words that crop up time and again in the glowing reviews, along with mentions of the stunning views and thumbs-up for the well-equipped, comfy caravan itself. Comfy sofas, a dining table and a kitchen full of kit are all part of the deal indoors, along with a bathroom that’s got a spacious shower (with a deep tray and plug that’s handy for cleaning up small kids). Big windows make sure that those spectacular views stay within range as much as possible, but for the best backdrop you’ll want to be at the table out on the deck, or using the stack of wood provided to build flames in the firepit. Nursing a hot drink while view-gazing is a cinch, as guests are provided with a welcome pack of tea, coffee, milk and other essentials (yes, Welshcakes are essential, no quibbles…) Sit and stare at your surrounds for your entire stay, if you wish, or get stuck in to active times in the Brecon Beacons National Park and the Wye Valley, both of which are a short drive away from the farm.

Start all hols here by heading into Hay-on-Wye, five minutes’ drive away – the town’s famed for its multitude of bookshops, and it’s also got a castle and a couple of galleries to wander around in. For foodie foraging, it’s best to time visits to coincide with the Thursday market day. Beyond the bookshops is the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, a cracking part of the world for walks and other outdoorsy activities. Llangorse Lake (25 minutes’ drive) is your starting point for horse riding and watersports, and the trail to the top of the area’s highest peak, Pen y Fan, is a 40-minute drive away for those with sights set on an uphill challenge. For somewhat gentler days out, aim for Crickhowell Castle (40 minutes), meet the furry beasts at the Small Breeds Farm Park and Owl Centre (20 minutes) or take a peaceful paddle down the River Wye from Glasbury (10 minutes).
