Contemplating a simple stay in Suffolk on a back to basics site with no distractions from lazing apart from open skies, lush green countryside and thriving towns close by...? Give adults-only Creeting Caravans a go, a park well suited to hikers and bikers with walks and cycle rides straight from the gates. Stick your tent up in one of the neat grass pitches if you prefer to stay closer to the facilities (toilets and water taps included) or opt for a wilder spot at the furthest end of the site to burrow down in nature. No matter which you pick, potters around the scenic surrounding lands are nearby (snatch a minute with friendly site owner Jason for recommendations). To scout out topnotch Suffolk things to see and do, guests can wander to nearby historic town Needham Market in 30 minutes (or drive in five) for independent shops, supermarkets, cafés and restaurants – as well as pubs for boozy lunches and dins. If an eagerness to ditch the driving takes hold, trains run from here to Bury St Edmunds (in 25 minutes) and Ipswich (about 15 minutes) – and then onto London’s Liverpool Street Station (in an hour and 20). Keen on keeping the car? The site’s within easy reach of the A14, which will whizz you to the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 35 minutes for beaches and estuaries aplenty, including Felixstowe’s sandy shoreline. Fish fans can pick up prawns by the pint at the seafood shack then sit and have a guzzle while watching the boats coming back and forth in the bay...

If you’d like to tick off a town or two while in Suffolk this can be arranged easily enough: Ipswich’s modern waterfront is accessible from the site by car in 20 minutes, while Bury St Edmunds historical streets and ruined abbey can be explored in 25. For wanders by the River Gipping down to Needham Lake, this nature reserve is a 35-minute totter away; come on a Wednesday or Saturday morning to browse for bargains in the field opposite at the rather spiffing car boot sale. Speaking of watery activities, fishing is fab at Creeting Lakes less than 10 minutes by car – and if you don’t manage to land a specimen for supper, drive the five minutes over to a local farm shop for homegrown produce or go shopping at the fishmongers, greengrocers and butchers in Stowmarket (about 10 minutes away).
