  • Spacious family-friendly site on the edge of Bodmin Moor
  • Half an hour's drive from Cornwall beaches and Port Isaac
  • Lamb burgers, mutton sausages, logs and kindling for sale at the farm
So, Cornwall’s coves, countryside and moors have caught your eye. One more splendid north Cornwall spot awaits, however: South Penquite Farm, a spacious family-friendly site on the edge of Bodmin Moor and half an hour’s drive from Port Isaac and Boscastle. Powered by solar panels and wind turbines, the peaceful, eco-driven 200-acre organic family beef and sheep farm is also very rich in wildlife and archaeological remains. Here there are no marked pitches and guest numbers are limited to ensure there's space for everyone to stretch out and unwind. Nab the site’s popular minted lamb burgers and mutton sausages, both home-produced, for your campfire (how's that for a taste of true local produce?). The farmhouse also sells logs and kindling. For other needs, there’s a village shop 35 minutes’ walk away, which has internet access and a small café. The farm is between the villages of Blisland (35 minutes’ walk) and St Breward (five minutes’ drive), which each have a pub. Even with Bodmin Moor at your fingertips, it's only half an hour's drive to north Cornwall's famed beaches and fishing ports too. The farm’s been fully organic since 2001 and they continue to use solar-heated hot water and harvested rainwater in the site’s clean, well-kept showers. More recently, they have added a wind turbine and 30 solar PV panels to the barn roof. There’s plenty of wildlife roaming around the laidback site and the farm’s own animals include horses, ponies, chickens, geese, ducks and their faithful working collies (who are, of course, very important employees).

Primitive grass tent or campervan campsite

Liked: Amazing site, we loved the fact that you could pitch where you wanted. The facilities on site are amazing, an indoor toy section for younger children and a play barn sand area. My older children enjoyed the table tennis. Toilets (it was a nice touch having music being played in the toilets) and showers are super clean. We very much enjoyed the lamb burgers and the dutch oven campfire cook set which we purchased on site. Having a lockable charging cabinet was a great idea. It gave the site a lovely feel to see all the turkey, ducks and chickens roaming about. Honestly this site is so well thought out, we thoroughly enjoyed our Stay.

Disliked: Nothing, it was perfect.

Primitive grass tent or campervan campsite

Liked: Second time we have done an 8 night stay at this incredible campsite. We visited last year for the first time and loved it so much we booked again for this summer. Everything is perfect. Large fields where you can pitch wherever you like, two of the nights we were here this year were ‘fully booked’ and there was still so much empty space, they purposely don’t let a lot of people book to ensure you have loads of room. Shower, toilet and washing up facilities are just fantastic - and a bonus having fridge/freezer/washing machine & drier. The food from barn bites cafe on the weekends is lovely. All of the staff are friendly and helpful. The animals on site are our favourite, cats, chickens, ducks, turkeys, cows, sheep and horses! Last year we had the pleasure of Missy the cat coming to basically live with us in our tent for the duration of our stay! Beautiful walks all around, great views over Bodmin moor, fantastic play area for the children and the stars in the sky on a clear night are breathtaking. Im sure we’ll be returning for a third visit in the future.

Primitive grass tent or campervan campsite

Liked: Fantastic campsite, very quiet with large showers, numerous washing up areas and clean toilets. Fridge and freezer available for freezer blocks and milk. Brilliant site. Close to Camel Trail for nice off road cycle ride and Bodmin Moor for walking.

Disliked: Very narrow lanes to get to site but worth the hassle of trying to pass oncoming vehicles for such a lovely site

Heading West on the A30 out of Launceston take the first right signposted to St Breward (several miles after Jamaica Inn). This takes you across a cattle grid onto the open moor. Follow this road without turning off (ignoring all turnings for either Blisland or St Breward) for approximately 3 miles and the South Penquite entrance land will come up on your right.

Local attractions

Have a pint or a fizzy drink where smugglers once rose a toast to their pursuits; Cornwall’s famed Jamaica Inn (15 minutes’ drive) is within striking distance of South Penquite Farm. That’s just one of the popular things to do around Bodmin Moor: others include fly fishing and moor walks at Colliford Lake (20 minutes), hiking in the Golitha Falls National Nature Reserve (25 minutes) or alpaca trekking (20 minutes). Of course, the Cornwall coast has a fierce reputation too. Squeeze through the Squeezy Belly Alley in Port Isaac (half an hour) and board a boat tour to spy on seals, dolphins and Tintagel Castle. If you’d like to see it up close instead, the clifftop castle of Tintagel Castle (35 minutes) really isn’t that far off. Merlin’s cave at Tintagel will introduce you to the idea of magic, but there’s more of that at The Museum of Witchcraft and Magic in Boscastle (half an hour). Just save some time for the surf, as Polzeath beach (40 minutes) is one of Cornwall’s most popular surfing beaches.
