  • Well-maintained peaceful park next to a 26,000-acre lake
  • 18-hole golf course next door with driving range and restaurant
  • Fishing, jetskiing, boating, clubhouse, shop and regular events
Oh my, you'll be busy around here. Sportsmen and women of all ilks have quite the pick of activities just around the grounds of O'Sullivan Sportsman Resort in Washington – and then there's the local region's sand dunes, lakes and canyons to scramble around too. Ready for all your options? (Seriously, there are loads.) Guests can plunge into fishing and boating at the adjoining Potholes Reservoir, rent jetskis, tackle fishing tournaments, play golf on the 18-hole course right next door, or simply idle around for the many (many) events, barbecues and games laid on at the clubhouse and community centre. Or there's the pool next to the centre, the big open field for running about, a big playground to leap around at, or sessions to get stuck into at the pickleball court: the O'Sullivan owners assure guests this last is somewhat addictive. Make time too for extensive explores of the local area, as O'Sullivan is in the Pothole Recreation Area and in the centre of the Columbia Basin Project, both crammed with stuff to see and do. It's a mere mile from here too to the wilds, hunting and fishing of the Columbia National Wildlife Refuge, and less than a mile from climbing, waterskiing and whitewater rafting at Potholes State Park. Less actively, local town Othello is 20 minutes' drive away. Facilities are as extensive as the activities: the resort has an ice cream parlour; a general store in front of the grounds has a deli, beer cave, groceries, propane sales and coffee, and there's a full-sized gas station. The golf resort next door has a restaurant if you want to eat out; otherwise, picnic tables aplenty are around the O'Sullivan grounds.

Local attractions

The adjoining lakes and those of the region are well known for their fishing: Pothole Reservoir next to the resort is filled with perch and rainbow trout, smallmouth and largemouth bass, walleye and bluegill. More fishing, along with hiking, biking and wildlife watching, is a couple of minutes' drive away at the Columbia National Wildlife Refuge. Options include the Marsh Unit 2 looped trail through brush and spectacular scenery past info panels on the park's geology and bats; canoeing on Shiner and Hutchinson lakes, or taking the 22-mile highly scenic drive from and back to the refuge headquarters. The crevices, crags and rock faces of the park are a famed birdwatching and wildlife haven: look out for geese, swans and sandhill cranes around the water, and cougars, lynxes, minks, coyotes, deer and porcupine elsewhere. Moving on from O'Sullivan or venturing out for day trips, it's about an hour and 50 minutes' drive north east to Spokane, and two and a half west to Seattle.
