  • Family-run park on Penn's Creek, on 36 acres of wooded and open land
  • Acclaimed angling area for trout and fly fishing
  • Tubing, kayaking, saltwater pool, shop and weekend restaurant
Just, simply, sensational. Angle a stay at Sunsational Family Campground for a spectacular setting and excellent facilities, all in the greenly lush location of the Susquehanna River valley and 20 minutes' drive from Millmont. Fishing folk are expertly catered for here: the campground is along the acclaimed angling waters of Penn’s Creek, the 67-mile tributary of the Susquehanna River in central Pennsylvania famed for its trout and fly fishing (hailed as among the best in the USA’s north east). If you’re not an angler, there’s tubing and kayaking to be had along the creek instead, or you could set out on the ATV trails within 15 minutes’ drive or zip along to Penn’s Cave 50 minutes away for boat tours through its limestone caverns. As well as the fishing (and tubing, and kayaking), Sunsational has a saltwater swimming pool to while away some hours in, and 36 acres of open and woodland areas to wander and hike. Indoors, there’s a recreational room with pool tables and arcade games, and a snack bar and restaurant dishing up breakfast, lunch, dinner, banana splits and ice cream sundaes dinner from Fridays to Sundays. Regular activities such as food nights, celebration weekends and weekly crafts sessions for kids are run by the family team. The park has waterfront pitches in wooded areas, a short stroll from a modern toilet and shower block. A grocery store is also available.

Local attractions

Once (if) you’ve finished with the fishing, the tubing, the kayaking and the woodland walks (and waterside wanders), make the three and a half-mile journey by foot or car to the Union County Sportsmen's Club and Wildlife Sanctuary, where there’s a restaurant, nature trails, miniature golf and a trout pond, as well as regular events. A day with a difference for kids is to the Mifflinburg Buggy Museum (30 minutes’ drive), in the only preserved 19th-century carriage shop in the region and home to a visitor centre, reconstructed carriage house, buggy factory, showroom and the original shop used by buggy maker William A Heiss. Or ask at Sunsational for details of local shopping: yard sales, Amish fruit stands and country stores are all close by (to be followed by a recommended glass of wine at Shade Mountain Winery half an hour away). Sunsational is just outside the Bald Eagle State Forest, where there are five state parks, several preserved natural areas and access to the 327 miles of the Pennsylvania Mid State Trail along the Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians and Allegheny Plateau.
